The School of Nursing offers two programs leading to the Bachelor of Science degree: one with a major in
professional nursing and one with a major in clinical research. Admission requirements to the School of

Requirements for Admission to the Bachelor of Science Degree Programs in the School of Nursing
Bachelor of Science with a major in Professional Nursing, Prelicensure Option: 99 hours
To be considered for admission to the School of Nursing prelicensure option (for students not yet registered nurses and
pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Professional Nursing) students must meet the following criteria:
1) Admission to the University of North Carolina Wilmington.
2) A 2.7 total GPA is required for evaluation of a student’s transcript by the School of Nursing. Each student’s total GPA,
including the fall semester/quarter grades of application year, is calculated on all transferable college courses attempted at all
accredited institutions of higher education according to the guidelines in use by the UNCW Admissions Office.
3) Successful completion of all prerequisite courses by time specified on application for admission:
a. All Basic Studies and all prerequisites prior to admission.
b. Minimum grade of "C" in all required prerequisites and co-requisite courses and their accompanying labs: BIO 201;
BIO 240; BIO 241; BIO 246; CHM 101; MAT 111 or MAT 151; NSG 251; either PAR 101, 110, 115, 205, 211, or
215; PSY 105; PSY 223; either SOC 105, ECN 125, or ECN 221; STT 210 or STT 215. (See Academic Advisor
for details.)
4) Certification as a nursing assistant (CNA 1) is required before the application deadline. Applicants must have taken a course
with a clinical component. (See Academic Advisor for details.)
5) Application deadline for admission to Fall is January 10; application deadline for admission to Spring is August 10.
Satisfactory score on Health Education Systems, Inc., (HESI) admission test is required. Contact the UNCW National Testing
Office, (910) 962-7444, for more details.
6) Physical, mental, and emotional health that enables a student to participate in and complete the program.
In addition to the Minimum criteria the following will also be considered:
1) Students with a prior baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution
2) Students with backgrounds in keeping with the university’s commitment to a diverse student body
3) Students’ GPA on courses prerequisite to nursing. (See Admission Criterion #3, a, b)
Special Requirements for all programs in the School of Nursing:
• Current immunization record (including TB or chest x-ray, Hepatitis B, and Varicella)
• CPR certification
• Professional liability insurance
• Verification of health insurance
• Negative drug screen
• Negative criminal background check
Application Process: Admission to the University is required prior to admission to the School of Nursing. Transfer students must
submit/complete an application to the UNCW Office of Admissions by posted admission deadlines. In addition to acceptance by the
University, all applicants must also submit a separate application to the School of Nursing by January 10th for Fall enrollment, or
August 10th for Spring semester enrollment to the School of Nursing. All applicants will be notified of admission decisions.
NOTE TO ADVISORS: Students interested in NSG should see a Pre-NSG advisor and check the School of Nursing WEB site
carefully. Students may and should declare Pre-Nursing or Pre-Clinical Research with 24 hours credit.

A minimum grade of “C” (2.00) is required in each NSG course. A cumulative GPA of 2.70 or better is required for progression in the
program and for graduation.
