Course requirements for all UNCW degrees include: (1) University Studies, (2) specific major requirements, and (3)
sufficient elective hours for a combined total of a minimum of 124 hours.

hours/3 semesters at the 300 level)
_____ MUS 183, 184, 185, 186, 187 Core Music Ensemble: Large Ensemble appropriate to the student's concentration 7 hours/ taken
each semester excepting the student teaching semester . Keyboard and guitar students may substitute up to
4 hours from MUS 130, MUS 182.

Piano Proficiency (1) Prerequisites: MUS 241 with C- or better (piano majors may substitute a secondary
applied in lieu of MUS 242.)
Concentration Core (25-28 hours)
Wind and Percussion Majors: 27 hours
MUS 146 or +186 (based on singing placement test results), 244, 245, 286, 306, 320, 325, *326, 331, *373, and 393.
String Majors: 27 hours
MUS 146 or +186 (based on singing placement test results), 243, 244, 245, 286, 306, 320, *326, 331, *373, and 393.
Vocal Majors: 28 hours

Piano and Guitar Majors: 25-26 hours

Note: Minimum of 4 semesters of MUS +186, but may substitute up to 4 hours from MUS 130 and 182.
NOTE: All proficiency examinations and admission to upper-divisional applied music study are prerequisites to formal admission into the teacher
education program in music.

below. Students planning to pursue licensure should apply to the School of EDN as soon as admissions requirements are met (typically in the
sophomore year) and plan their programs in regular consultation with their advisors. Teacher licensure requirements are established at the state level
and may be changed by the state at any time.
NOTE: To satisfy the Oral Communication Requirement, a student must successfully complete MUS 285 or 496.
NOTE: Music education majors are not required to take EDN 408 during the professional semester.
A minimum final grade of “C-” (2.00) is required in each music course and a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better is required for
graduation.
