Responses to the CMS Strategic Plan Dr. Richard Laws has received official responses to the CMS strategic plan from the Biology and Chemistry departments. He has also received responses from several faculty members. The CRISP committee will meet on November 26th to consider these responses. CRISP will then prepare a written response and make needed changes to the strategic plan. There was a discussion of several responses to the strategic plan and two items were discussed in depth: 1) The Planning Process on page 6 of the strategic plan does not show that the IAC will review and vote on the plan before it is presented to the entire UNCW marine science community. This step could be added between steps three and four. 2) Goal A.1: Formalize the Marine Science Program on page 9 is vague and needs to be revised and written in more detail. Page 2 CMS Internal Advisory Committee Meeting November 21, 2007 Pilot Projects Dr. Baden distributed the Marine Science Research and Equipment Pilot Project memo. He noted several items; collaborative efforts are encouraged but single investigator projects are equally appropriate, investigators who have not complied with requirements from previous year’s projects will not be considered for future funding, faculty may be named on only one application, faculty with substantial or numerous funded research projects are dissuaded from applying The applications are included in the memo. Proposals should be sent electronically in a PDF document by January, 25, 2008. The pilot project memo will be sent electronically to marine science faculty members next week. STAR Employee Recognition Award Dr. Baden announced a new CMS employee incentive program called the STAR Award. It is similar the Kudos program that HR has, but this recognition is for CMS employees who have shown dedication to excellence or given exceptional service. We will have a nomination lock box near the mail boxes at CMS. Anyone can participate by filling out the nomination form and dropping it in the box. We will randomly choose one employee each month and they will be recognized at our CMS monthly gatherings. A small gift and plaque will be given to each winner. An email announcing this program will be sent to everyone in the near future. Request for Mentor of the Year Award nominations It is time again to receive nominations for the Mentor of the Year award. The nominations are due in March and the winner will be announced in April. Dr. Baden will give more detail about this process at the IAC meeting on December 17th.
