Discussion Item: Creation of a Resident Programs Committee
 The IAC approved a modification to Section 991 of the Center for Marine Science
Handbook, adding Section 10 to establish the Resident Programs Committee.


Discussion Item: Natural Area Teaching Lab (NATL) Update
 Bruce Gibson provided an update on the NATL Marsh Boardwalk.

Dr. Hackney, Dr. Posey, Dr. Taggart, Bob Stroud and Bruce Gibson identified
a potential path for the boardwalk that highlights features and habitats of
interest.

Details are available on the CMS web page at www.uncwil.edu/cmsr/ then
select links, then Natural Area Teaching Laboratory, then Slide Show

Future plans include presentations of the proposed NATL Boardwalk to a
broad range of UNCW Departments and interested parties, inclusion of the
proposed route on the Special Use Permit Application for the new Operations
Facility, and grant applications for funding support.

Modify Section 991 of the Center for Marine Science Handbook
991 Standing Committees

The Center for Marine Science enjoys multiple advisory and operating committees to ensure faculty
input and smooth operation. All committees are composed of interested faculty, who serve on an
annual basis for no compensation. Committees select their own chair. Chairs serve on an annual
basis, with turnover occurring in May of each calendar year.
Add Section 10, as follows:
10. Resident Programs Committee
composition: All faculty and staff of programs resident at the Center for Marine Science not
otherwise directly represented on the Internal Advisory Committee shall select one member from
each of these programs to serve on this committee. These programs include the National Undersea
Research Center, North Carolina Coastal Reserve/National Estuarine Research Reserve, North
Carolina Sea Grant Extension Office, the Lower Cape Fear River Program, Marine Quest and the
CMS Development Director. The CMS Associate Director for Research is an ex officio member
whose responsibility is to represent the Resident Programs Committee interests to the Internal
Advisory Committee.
