CMS Internal Advisory Committee Meeting
November 12, 2008
UNC Coastal and Marine Sciences Impact Proposal
The meeting began with discussion about the UNC Costal and Marine Sciences Impact
Proposal. This proposal initiated by UNC Office of the President, Erskin Bowels. The
objective of this proposal is to address the needs and challenges facing coastal and marine
ecosystems in North Carolina; to bring together marine science leadership across the six
major universities and research centers in the state; to generate solutions to the major issues
facing coastal and oceanographic environments; and to address similar needs from these
institutions.
Discussion of this proposal was a major focus of the meeting. Dr. Baden’s focus was on
getting as much input from the group as possible. He requested that IAC members provide
input to the document, by providing feedback directly onto the document, using trackchanges. Feedback was due by the close of business, Friday, November 14.
The UNC OP follow up meeting on this proposal will be held in Chapel Hill on November
17. Dr. Baden will participate in this meeting.
Consortium for Ocean Leadership Annual Membership
The Center for Marine Science has received its annual membership invoice ($13,500) from the
Consortium for Ocean Leadership. Due to financial strains, CMS would be unable to
maintain this individual membership. Dr. Baden proposed that a “NC Consortium” be
established between CMS and other institutions in the state (potentially to include Duke,
UNC, NC State, ECSU, and UNCW), making the cost of membership more viable for the
individual institutions. Consortium membership would give less access however to individual
institutions, than was previously afforded CMS as a single membership. This proposal was
accepted by the IAC members. Dr. Baden will present this proposal at the UNC OP meeting
on November 17, and try to get collaboration from the other institutions, mentioned above.
PhD in Marine Science
Drs. Willey and Morrison gave an update on the proposed PhD in Marine Science. The name
for this degree program will be “PhD in Coastal and Ocean Studies”. They hope that this
degree will draw in a wider student base, and the focus is on making this a “broad” degree
program, bringing in the Education and Business schools. They will use existing faculty and
courses from Biology, Chemistry, Geology and EVS, with some add-on courses. The

program will have “themes”, similar to tracks, and will be very broad. Resources are of
concern, as university funding will be strained. This will affect sourcing new TAs for the
program. The committee has been asked to put this program together with as little new
resources as possible. Thus the need to utilize existing courses in Physics, Chemistry, and
Geology, which will serve as the base. There should also be a core program of management
courses, and possibly EVS.
MS in Coastal and Ocean Policy
Dr. Sizemore reported on the progress of the MCOP program. The program is moving
forward, although it has been three years in the making, and has incurred many drafts. The
most significant change is that the administrative structure has been modified. The committee
is working with the CAS and the Graduate School to move this forward. The IAC group
agreed that the program is much needed, and will likely be very successful. There is broad
support across the university, for this program. Dr. Baden thanked Dr. Sizemore for his three
years of hard work on this.
Draft Criteria for MS Faculty
Dr. Baden presented the group with draft criteria for establishing MS faculty. Dr. Baden asked
that the members review criteria, and discuss with colleagues for input on this. The group
will finalize criteria at the next IAC meeting, on January 21.
Other Items
The Isotope Ratio Mass Spec lab is searching for a new faculty lead in this facility. Craig
Tobias will be leaving this post (he is moving to Connecticut). The search has begun for
technicians, a number of interviews have taken place, and group of finalists have been
selected. This process is now in HR. CMS has 4 positions in line under the new HR
“scheduling” process.
Dylan McNamara wants to move his lab from Physical Oceanography into the new OPS wing
at CMS. Dr. Baden is working on getting him 3 offices in the new wing. Dylan would give up
his other lab, in the CMS main building.
BK Song is moving his office from the second floor at CMS, to a first floor office.
