The University Of North Carolina At Wilmington CENTER FOR MARINE SCIENCE CMS Internal Advisory Committee Summary – March 3, 2004 – Page 2 Discussion Item: New Operations Center Update (Dennis Ihnat) Dennis provided an update on the project Latest cost estimate provided by Boney (12/03) showed a budget deficit of $192K. Soils analysis identified need for special foundation augmentation (concrete piles), adding approximately $204K to the construction cost, for a total deficit of almost $400K. Boney has been instructed to prepare a list of options, with cost estimates, for potential cost reductions/value engineering recommendations. In the following discussion, a question was raised on the status of the CMS-WB property. It was noted that Friday Hall renovation project “refugees” are looking at CMS-WB for potential temporary relocation space, and other “refugees are also looking. Discussion Item: Pilot Project Reviews (Jim Merritt) Jim recommended approval of all equipment requests (five submitted). During the ensuing discussion, a recommendation was made that for the next Pilot Project cycle a separate request form and evaluation criteria be developed for equipment requests. Jim stated that all projects and equipment requests submitted are fundable (sufficient funds are available to fund all requests). During the ensuing discussion, a question was raised: Are all projects meritorious? A request was made that future proposals be provided electronically (PDF or CD). ACTION: Based on that discussion, the IAC voted to fund the 5 equipment requests and 3 of the 4 Pilot Projects.
