Agreement Signing Ceremony
On June 7th at 1:00 PM in the Watson College of Education building, the PDS office
sponsored our partnership re-signing ceremony. Every three years, we visit with
partnership superintendents, discuss the achievements and challenges of the partnership,
and re-negotiate the partnership agreements. We are pleased to announce that all of our
district partners re-signed three year agreements. Superintendents and their
representatives joined us on June 7th to celebrate the renewal of our partnerships and to
recommit to working together to improve the quality of teaching and learning in the
region. Dean Teitelbaum offered opening comments that stressed the changing times for
public education and highlighted the critical need for us to work collaboratively with
school districts. Chancellor Gary Miller highlighted the importance of partnerships and
regional engagement to the university. Superintendent Alan Faulk delivered remarks
during the ceremony. He emphasized the importance of the partnership to the students of
Columbus County and, in particular, thanked Somer Lewis and Brian Brinkley for their
work in facilitating a summer program for students from Acme Delco Middle School.
D.C. Virgo principal and Ed.D. student Eric Irizarry delivered remarks about the
importance of the partnership from a principal’s perspective. Finally, PDS Director, Dr.
Donyell Roseboro gave closing comments focused on the future of our partnerships and
the hope that we can work better together. During the ceremony, Dr. Scott Imig led the
official signing by the chancellor, dean, and superintendents.
Global Learning Technology Conference
The first annual Global Learning Technology Conference was held Aug. 9-10 at the Watson College of Education, University of
North Carolina, Wilmington, NC. The conference was sponsored by the Office of E-Learning and the Master of Science in
Instructional Technology Program. Approximately 80 participants exchanged ideas on the applications of learning technologies for
education and training. This two-day conference brought together educators, instructional technologists, instructional designers, Elearning specialists, and other learning technology professionals. The theme for the conference was “learn, innovate and connect.”
The program offered multiple hands-on workshops and paper and poster presentations that would help position learning technology
efforts now and into the future. The keynote speaker, Dr. Charles Severance, a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of
Information at the University of Michigan delivered the keynote address entitled “Initial Experiences Teaching a Massively Open
Online Course (MOOC)”. Dr. Charles Severance has been at the forefront of teaching and learning for some time. In addition to his
appointment at the University of Michigan, he also works for Blackboard as Sakai Chief Strategist and the IMS Global Learning
Consortium promoting and developing standards for teaching and learning technology. Previously, he was the Executive Director of
the Sakai Foundation and the Chief Architect of the Sakai Project. More recently, he is teaching a Massively Open Online Course
(MOOC) using the Coursera teaching platform (http://www.uncw.edu/ed/gltc/keynote.html).The conference began with guest speaker
Mr. Lucas Gillispie, a well-known local educator in the area talking about gaming in education, particularly the use of MMORPG’s
(Massively Multiplayer Online Role play Games), mobile game-based learning, virtual training and simulations.

School Leadership Professional Development
In June and July, Dr. Bill Sterrett, Department of Educational Leadership, delivered a ten-hour professional
development course for school leaders. This course focused on the principal’s role in improving teacher
effectiveness in a collaborative manner. Learners engaged with current research and studied the insights of
successful school leaders, authors, and innovators in the field. Participants selected focus areas, from serving as
a learning leader with professional learning communities to leading effective professional development in the
school setting, and applied those strategies in their own school by creating an implementation plan. This PD
session consisted of an initial 3-hour work session at the Watson College followed by three online modules
delivered in June and July. Participants completed the training equipped with implementation plans that are
applicable in their leadership setting.

Columbus County Schools Summer Enrichment
Program
In July of 2012, the Watson College of Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, in partnership
with Columbus County Schools, continued a distinctive summer enrichment project for middle school students on
the campus of UNCW. Supported by a federal Race-to-the-Top grant award, Columbus County’s superintendent,
Mr. Alan Faulk, prioritized the Project for a second year to support 30 students from Chadbourn Middle School.
Georgia Spaulding, CMS Principal, evaluated student data, surveyed 22 students who had participated in the
program during Year 1 and chose 30 rising seventh, eighth and ninth-graders who would benefit from educational
remediation, enrichment and opportunity. The plan for the Summer Enrichment Project mirrored Year 1 in that it
included eight, day-long sessions at UNCW, with students traveling by bus, engaging in morning enrichment
experiences, and spending the afternoons being tutored by UNCW students. Tutoring focused on enhancing literacy
skills and inquiry-based research, while the enrichment experiences focused on career and college preparation.
Students were provided with a number of learning opportunities as WCE faculty collaborated with faculty and staff
across campus, including UNCW’s Career Center, the Center for the Education of STEM, the Cameron School of
Business, and the Upperman African American Cultural Center. These collaborations provided students with a
broad college experience and the opportunity to further explore their interests in many unique areas. Our thanks to
Somer Lewis, Watson’s Teacher-in-Residence for coordinating this project.

Spotlight on our Faculty
This summer, the PDS office collaborated with the Junior Seahawk program and Men & Women United of Columbus County to sponsor a week long enrichment camp that integrated math, science, literacy, and social studies. Several Watson faculty and staff worked diligently to make this possible—Somer Lewis and Brian Brinkley facilitated the literacy workshops, Shelby Morge & Ginger Rhodes facilitated the math workshops, Chris Gordon,
Deloris Rhodes, & Chandra Roughton facilitated the science & technology workshops, and Elizabeth Crawford
facilitated the social studies workshops. The program served 11 students from Columbus County. The students
programmed robots, worked the GPS technology, discussed the impact of plastic on the global environment,
designed and flew paper airplanes, launched rockets, and completed an inquiry project.
