The Winthrop Poll Findings
Data on declared or potential 2008 Presidential
Candidates
Data represent responses from 694 randomly sampled South Carolinians over the age of
18. Data using all respondents has a Margin of Error of +/- 3.72%. As is true with all
survey data, subsets that do not utilize all respondents (e.g. breakdown by political party)
have a slightly higher margin of error. Data were collected between Feb. 7 and Feb. 28,
2007.
This series of Questions was introduced with the following script:
“Next we’re going to ask you your opinion about some individuals and groups. You may or
may not be familiar will all of these individuals or groups. If we come to someone you are
not familiar with, tell me and we’ll move on.
For each person or group, I’d like for you to tell me whether your opinion of them is
Very Favorable, Somewhat Favorable, Neither Favorable Nor Unfavorable, Somewhat
Unfavorable, or Very Unfavorable.
First we’re going to ask about some people whose names have been mentioned as
possible Republican candidates for President in 2008.”
Prior to the list of Democratic names, the following introduction was made:
“Next we’d like to ask about some people whose names have been mentioned as
possible Democratic candidates for President in 2008.”
When the interviewer began the list of names, respondents were first asked, “Are you
familiar with _________?” If they responded, “No,” it was coded “Not Familiar” and the
interviewer moved to the next candidate. If they responded yes, they were asked, “What
is your opinion of _________?” They were offered the options, “Very Favorable,”
“Somewhat Favorable,” “Neither Favorable nor Unfavorable,” “Somewhat Unfavorable,”
“Very Unfavorable.” If they responded that they didn’t know or refused to respond, this
was recorded as well.
