Use this breakout session to standardize your methods and practice in-field sampling, data recording, and aquatic macrophyte identification. (Warden) B) Advanced Identification of Wisconsin Macrophytes: Know your plants pretty well? Practice your taxonomic keying skills on some of the more cryptic species you might encounter. Species covered will likely include: Thin-leaved pondweeds, Myriophyllum spp., Najas spp., Sparganium spp., and various emergents such as sedges and rushes. (Knight, Skawinski) C) Wetland Invasive Plant Identification: This session will explore the many invasive wetland plants that are threatening and invading waterbodies across the state. Learn how to recognize and identify the invaders of most concern, and how to distinguish them from similar native species. (Woods) D) Aquatic Invasive Plants on the Horizon: Additional aquatic invasive plants are knocking on Wisconsin’s doorstep. Learn to identify these new invaders before they arrive here, so you can be prepared to recognize them. (Nault) E) Field Identification of Algae: Learn to identify some of Wisconsin's most common macroscopic algae, including filamentous green algae, using characteristics easily seen in the field. Learn how to recognize different blue-green algal bloom-forming genera as well.
