Establish Joint BS in Mechanical Engineering degree w/
NCSU
# 26
Description:
Goal
Establish Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in collaboration with North
Carolina State University’s College of Engineering through a mix of distance technology and
onsite offerings
UNC Tomorrow References
● 4.1.1 “UNC should prepare its students for successful professional and personal lives
in the 21st century, equipping them with the tools they will need to adapt to the ever-changing
world.”
● 5.7 “UNC should encourage and facilitate interdisciplinary and inter-institutional
collaboration among its institutions.”
● 4.4.3 “UNC should seek to align appropriate campus programs with the strategic
economic plans (including sector and cluster plans) of their regions and the state, recognizing
the unique differences and challenges of our state’s economic and geographic regions.”
Narrative Justification
UNCW is working to establish a baccalaureate mechanical engineering program in partnership
with North Carolina State University. The goal is for UNCW students to earn their engineering
degrees entirely at UNCW, with UNCW providing general education and some major courses
using UNCW faculty and resources. NC State University will provide specialized upper division
mechanical engineering courses for the majors using synchronous distance
technologies. UNCW has evaluated the needs of regional businesses to determine that
mechanical engineering is the most requested discipline for the major.
The anticipated enrollment is 75 majors, admitted on a cohort model (NC State University
offers distance courses only one semester per year). Discussions have indicated students will
pay tuition at UNCW with UNCW keeping the tuition to cover program costs, with NC State
University receiving the enrollment growth, legislative allocations for the program. The
diploma for graduation would be an NCSU diploma, but the program would move toward a
joint degree model as enrollments develop and solidify.
Space Requirements: Based on the NC State University Construction 00702 Guidelines, 108
assignable square feet (ASF) are needed for each engineering laboratory station. Anticipated
enrollment is 75 students per year for a curriculum that requires four laboratories for degree
completion. The anticipated requirement would be for UNCW to house three of the laboratories
to be taken in the junior year (NC State University courses ME305 ME Lab I Measurement and
Mechanical Science Concepts and ME306 ME Lab II Fluid and Thermal Devices) and senior year
(NC State University course MAE469 Controls Lab). The fourth laboratory (MAE416 ME Design)
is a senior design project laboratory necessitating a fabrication facility and would require
students to spend one semester in residence at NC State University during their senior year.
Each laboratory at UNCW would require one station (a 5' laboratory bench) for each 2
students plus one station for the lab director, plus the associated equipment (flow meters,
wind tunnels, actuators).
