Lead in Improving Health and Wellness
Narrative Justification
The Institute for Memory Research’s multidisciplinary approach to memory research brings together the intellectual and physical resources necessary to attack some of the most important problems in the field of memory today. Consider Alzheimer’s disease. AD, one of the most urgent public health problems our nation faces, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is first manifest as a memory disorder and subsequently destroys other intellectual processes. Members of the Institute for Memory Research from the departments of chemistry, computer science, biology, and psychology possess all of the expertise to conduct high level basic memory research of this type, including the development of biochemical and computer technologies to mediate the effects of memory-robbing diseases.
Countless families in southeastern North Carolina are touched by memory loss in a very personal way. Some of these families want and need support to help address the problems. As the only non-profit memory related research center in southeastern North Carolina, the
Institute for Memory Research will provide the necessary high level basic memory research.
The Institute for Memory Research will provide undergraduate and graduate students with research opportunities that bridge departmental boundaries. The interdisciplinary nature of the
Institute will allow the participating departments to attract faculty and graduate students who would be attracted to an institution where pursuit of research questions is not limited to a single discipline, but rather is encouraged to cross those conventional disciplinary boundaries. Because external funding bodies favor interdisciplinary research programs, the
Institute for Memory Research will be able to attract new support and thus bring in new equipment and resources beyond that available to individuals or single academic departments.
The Institute for Memory Research will train students with specialized skills in several emerging and growing industry segments, including the biomedical, biotechnology, and computational neuroscience areas. The Institute for Memory Research will coordinate with academic departments in the development of new cross disciplinary courses and curricula. Examples of new courses that may be developed are new seminars and courses in cognitive science, neurological numerical processing, computational chemistry, and bioinformatics. Finally, university students will be integrated in educational and outreach programs to the public and K-12 communities.
The Institute for Memory Research has the potential to have a significant positive impact on the economic development of the state of North Carolina. The highly skilled students coming out of the Institute for Memory Research will 1) provide the human resources required by the technical firms already present in the region, and 2) attract new technical firms to the region.
As outlined above there are five strategic goals identified for the Institute for Memory
Research. These goals are as follows:
1) establish a high quality interdisciplinary research program in memory science,
2) establish a diverse base of funding sources that generate substantial support,
3) develop unique opportunities to train undergraduate, masters level and post-doctoral students,
4) show the initial steps toward moving new technologies into the community,
5) develop an effective outreach program.
The Institute for Memory Research has outlined a ten year budget plan that will reduce the commitment to state funding by year 5. With the requirements of a multidisciplinary approach to memory research, the Institute for Memory Research anticipates major federal research funding as well as available funds from major foundations to enhance and expand the intellectual and physical resources necessary to attack some of the most important problems in the field of memory today. Considering Alzheimer’s disease as one of the most urgent public health problems our nation faces, the Institute for Memory Research is anticipating to grow to a national memory research institute.
