Page 3 25 Feet for Health UNCW took a big step towards a healthier campus on June 1st with our new tobacco policy. The new tobacco policy includes a “perimeter policy”, or no tobacco use within 25 feet of building entrances. For both nonsmokers and smokers, this policy provides a clean, healthy environment for UNCW students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Smoking is already prohibited in all campus buildings and there is no distribution or sale of tobacco products allowed anywhere on campus. Breathing even a little secondhand smoke can be harmful for healthy people, causing damage to your platelets, blood vessels, respiratory and cardiovascular system. For people with heart disease or respiratory conditions like asthma, the consequences are more severe. (www.surgeongeneral.gov, 2007) UNCW is not the first campus in North Carolina to limit smoking. As of January 1st, UNC Chapel Hill is almost completely tobacco-free with a new policy that prohibits smoking within 100 feet of any campus building. ECU began a 25 foot perimeter policy in August 2007. Most public school districts in North Carolina are 100% tobacco free. Do you want to know more about the Tobacco Policy? Do you want to help your student quit smoking? Check out www.uncw.edu/crossroads for information on the Campus Tobacco Coalition and http:// seahawks.stopsmokingcenter.net for help quitting. All residents of North Carolina can also call 1-800-QUITNOW. And when you visit UNCW, remember to go 25 feet for Health! The Abrons Student Health Center is an amenity that nearly every UNCW student is familiar with. Whether they are worried about a cold or are simply not feeling well, countless UNCW students utilize these services. The Health Center offers walk-in sick care, immunizations, allergy injections, physicals, preventive education, and much more. In addition to providing high quality health care, the Abrons Student Health Center is the home of a pharmacy and a registered dietitian. These two services are conveniences that your son or daughter can utilize during their time at UNCW! The UNCW Pharmacy provides confidential and essential information to students regarding his/her medications and their proper use. A registered Pharmacist personally counsels each student and discusses with him/her information regarding dosing intervals, potential reactions, and adverse effects of medications prescribed. Students are welcome to ask any questions about over the counter items, self-medication, and herbal remedies. The pharmacy also dispenses medications prescribed by on and off campus providers, screens for drug interactions and medication allergies, and provides over the counter medications at a reduced cost. The UNCW Pharmacy strives to make proper drug use and education part of the student’s educational experience. Not only can UNCW students utilize the Abrons Student Health Center and the Pharmacy, they can also visit the on campus dietitian, Alice Merritt, free of charge! Students can see Alice to discuss a variety of nutrition related topics including weight management, eating disorders, vegetarian diets, and food allergies and intolerances. Balance, moderation, and variety are Alice’s top priorities when it comes to nutritional education and guiding students towards a healthier diet. UNCW students can make an individual appointment to meet with Alice by calling either number listed below!
