The Honors Faculty Mentor Award This award was created in 2012 by the Student Honors Advisory Council to honor the practice of mentoring undergraduate research and creative scholarship at UNCW. The award is intended to recognize demonstrated excellence in mentoring undergraduate researchers, to encourage mentoring relationships with undergraduate students, and to convey the campus' high regard for such contributions made by the faculty of the academic and research community. This award recognizes honors project supervisors who are committed to honors-level undergraduate research which extends above and beyond the classroom experience. To complete requirements for University Honors, each student will conduct a senior honors project, independent scholarly work in the major with one-on-one supervision from a faculty mentor. Rachel Abele, President National Fellowships The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hollings Scholarship Hollings Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students seeking careers in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology and education, in honor of long-time South Carolina Senator Ernest F. Hollings, who was instrumental in the creation of NOAA and was an advocate in creating legislation designed to protect the world’s oceans. The scholarship also offers a related summer internship designed to provide “hands-on” multi-disciplinary training. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning. Gilman International Scholarship The Gilman Scholarship Program offers a competition for awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. Recipients: Heather Harrell, Summer 2015, Australia Hailey Wells, Spring 2015, Russia Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant The National Science Foundation awards grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. Goldwater Scholarship The Boren Undergraduate Scholarship The National Security Education Program encourages students to internationalize their education by studying in countries critical to US national interests, but underrepresented in study abroad. Preference is given to students pursuing fields of study related to national security. Applicants must plan to use the scholarship for a study abroad program that ends before the student graduates. Applicants: Christian Godwin Juliet King Kaitlin Rice The Goldwater Scholarship makes awards to undergraduate students to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in these fields. Applicants must be matriculated sophomore or junior level students with at least a B average. Applicants: William Fetzner, awarded honorable mention 2015 Amelia Johnson The Fulbright US Scholarship US-UK Fulbright Commission Summer Institutes The Fulbright US Student Program funds international exchange programs for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. Applicants have bachelor's degrees by the beginning date of the grant, and are thinking of studying, assistant-teaching English, or conducting research abroad. The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers special Summer Institutes for US citizens to come to the UK. These programs provide the opportunity for undergraduates, with at least two years of undergraduate study remaining, to come to the UK for a several week academic and cultural summer program. Participants experience an academic program at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic abilities. Fifty grants are awarded each year. Students must have at least two semesters remaining at their home institution after completing the study abroad experience. Applicant: Jackie Hartman The Morris K. Udall & Stewart K. Udall Scholarship The Udall Foundation awards undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to two groups. The first is juniors and seniors in fields related to the environment and the second to Native American and Alaska Natives in fields related to health care or tribal public policy. Scholarship recipients are eligible for one year of support per application year on the undergraduate level. A university nomination is required, and an applicant must be a matriculated sophomore or junior level student with a 3.0 GPA. Applicants: Mary Jaskowiak Amelia Lucas Cara Paolicelli Juliet Taylor UNCW CSURF Undergraduate Research Fellowships The Center for the Support of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships (CSURF) invites applications for the UNCW Undergraduate Research and Creativity Fellowships competition each spring. The competition’s aim is to stimulate original research among undergraduate students at UNCW. Each student must have a faculty sponsor who serves as an advisor and assists in selecting a project. The student presents the proposal to an interdisciplinary committee as a written paper and an interview. Fellowship winners receive a tuition stipend for the next academic year.
