The Fulbright Program awards approximately 7,500 new grants annually. ---Currently, the Fulbright Program operates in over 155 countries. Receives primary funding from Congress to the Department of State. Participating governments, host institutions, and foreign countries and the US also contribute through cost sharing, tuition waivers, housing, and benefits. Program Design The U.S. Student Program is designed to give recent B.S./B.A. graduates, master’s and doctoral candidates, and young professionals, artists and musicians opportunities for personal development and international experience. Most grantees plan their own programs. Projects may include university coursework, independent library or field research, classes in a music conservatory or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or a combination. They are available to supplement an award from a non-IIE source that does not provide funds for travel or to supplement a student's own funds for study. Travel grants provide: • Round-trip transportation to the country where the student will pursue studies for an academic year • Supplemental health and accident insurance • The cost of language or orientation course programs, if available in the host country. Preference will be given to creative projects that are conveyed in a dynamic fashion and are accompanied by a feasible plan. Types of Grants: English Teaching Assistantships Africa (Cameroon, South Africa) Asia (India, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, others) Eastern Europe (Bosnia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic) Middle East (Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, West Bank) Western Europe (Belgium, France, Spain, others) Western Hemisphere (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Columbia, others) Fulbright Business Opportunities Mexico: Nine Binational Business Grants to enhance knowledge, expertise and understanding of post-NAFTA Mexico. Combines course work in international business and law with an internship at a Mexico based company. Advanced level Spanish required Spain: Three International MBA Grants for full-time study in a one year program at the Institutio de Empresa in Madrid, plus elective seminars and a three month internship. Bilingual program, so only Basic Spanish skills required at time of program Norway: International MBA Fulbright Journalism Grants Germany: Professional Journalism Awards for 15 beginning professional journalists or recent graduates in journalism or related fields to conduct independent research and serve as interns or guest journalists at newspapers, publishers or television and radio stations in Germany. Solid proficiency in German commensurate with the project is required. UK: Alistair Cooke Award in Journalism for a candidate to pursue the first year of a graduate-level program in Journalism in the UK. There is a possibility of an internship with the BBC for the successful candidate. The award is open to candidates at all degree levels. UK Summer Institutes Undergraduates (over 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left Three, four, five or six week academic and cultural summer program. Explorations of the culture, heritage and history of the UK includes airfare, tuition and fees at the host university/institution, room and board and in some cases a small daily allowance Application Deadline: March, 11 2013 Fulbright Critical Language Enhancement Award The Critical Language Enhancement Award provides an opportunity for Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees to receive three to six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. The award provides a monthly living stipend and tuition reimbursement for grantees to pursue language training in the host country. Approximately 150 awards were available for 20092010 Fulbright U.S. Student Program grantees. Only select languages and host-countries are available for this opportunity. Factors Affecting Selection I Teresa Krebs 1998 Korea Major: French & Spanish Project: Teaching Assistantship ---Extent to which the candidate and the project will help to advance the program aim of promoting mutual understanding among nations. ---Ability of the supervising agencies abroad to arrange supervision. ---Requirements of programs in individual countries. In many countries, only advanced degree candidates may apply, and in some countries, certain fields of study are closed. Factors Affecting Selection II ---Ratio between the number of awards offered in a given country and the number of applications received. Therefore, if your project can be accomplished in a less competitive country, your chances for success in the competition will be enhanced by applying in the less stringent country competition. If you are interested, you apply for the scholarship in your junior (or senior) year. There will be a workshop in April for those applying for the next round of scholarships In the meantime, it is imperative that you begin the following: Decide which country you wish to study in Undertake language study (the scholarship expects you to have the ability to participate fully as a student in that country) Establish contacts with professors here (for reference letters and advice) Learn as much as you can about the country you have chosen (following international news, history, culture, etc)
