FALL FACULTY MEETING September 11, 2013 Cameron Hall 105 4:00 – 5:00 pm Meeting Minutes I. Call to Order. Dr. Gabriel Lugo, President of the Faculty Senate, called the meeting to order at 4:10 pm. He welcomed everyone and introduced Mr. Zachery Steffey, President of Student Government Association (SGA). II. Greetings from SGA President. Mr. Zachery Steffey introduced himself as the new Student Body President of SGA for this academic year 2013-2014. He stated that he considers it a privilege to serve in this role at UNCW, and that the Vice President and alumni have several platform roles as well, which have been shared with the Student Senate, Academic Affairs Committee, and Provost Denise Battles. Mr. Fraser affirmed SGA’s commitment to addressing questions from the Provost, faculty and students. III. Chancellor’s Report. Chancellor Gary L. Miller requested a moment of silence in honor of the 12th anniversary of the 911 tragedy. He spoke of state budget reductions, pay raises which are prohibited for EPA and SPA, except promotions, with very few exceptions. He spoke of the efforts of the Office University Relations in developing branding and use of identity logos for materials for the public. Dr. Miller announced unused bond funds from the Student Rec Center have been approved to be used to upgrade the outdoor recreation and athletic facilities on campus, starting in the spring of 2014. Dr. Miller informed the group the October Board of Trustees meeting will include a workshop on Universities Studies, e-Teal, and the role of faculty in the development of curriculum. He is encouraging faculty participation. He also announced President Ross will visit the campus, details to follow. He thanked the faculty for their service to UNCW. IV. Faculty Senate Report. Dr. Gabriel Lugo presented this year’s Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award to Dr. Paolo Almeida, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Dr. Herb Berg, Department of Philosophy and Religion. This award includes a medallion, a $1,500 award and a reserved parking space. V. Faculty Awards Presentations. A. Dr. Battles recognized the following 2012-2013 recipients which were announced last spring: Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award College of Arts and Sciences Dr. Cara Cilano English Dr. Jeffery Hill Environmental Studies Dr. Amy Kirschke Art and Art History Cameron School of Business Dr. Christopher F. Dumas Economics and Finance Watson College of Education Dr. Eleni Pappamihiel IT, Foundations, & Sec. Ed. College of Health and Human Services Dr. Deborah Pollard School of Nursing Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching 2013 Dr. Peter W. Schuhmann Economics and Finance B. Mr. Jody Burke, Chair, Alumni board of Directors Awards and Scholarship Committee, presented the J. Marshall Crews Distinguished Faculty Award to Dr. Robert W. Smith. He received a $500 award, a plaque and a hand carved bowl by Dr. J. Marshall Crews. C. Dr. Battles presented the following 2012-2013 awards, accompanied by Chancellor Gary L. Lecturer of the Year Award 2013 Dr. Laura Spivey, School of Health and Applied Human Sciences Mr. David Bollinger, Communication Studies Each received a plaque and a $750 award. Graduate Mentor Award 2013 Dr. Thomas Barth, Public and International Affairs Excellence in e-Learning Award 2013 Dr. Elizabeth Crawford Early Childhood, Elementary, Middle, Literacy, & Special Education Distinguished Scholarly Engagement and Public Service Award 2013 Dr. Clarice Sue Combs, School of Health and Applied Human Sciences Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award 2013 Dr. Patricia H. Kelley, Geography and Geology Dr. Sridhar Varadarajan , Chemistry and Biochemistry Each received a medallion and will receive a $5,000 annual award for three years. Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award 2013 Dr. Patricia H. Kelley, Geography and Geology Dr. Kelley received a medallion, a $1,500 award and a designated parking space. D. Dr. Ron Vetter, Interim Dean, Graduate School, recognized faculty who have received research funding of one million dollars for the university, new members of the James F. Merritt Million Dollar Club, and those who have received research funding of five million dollars and ten million dollars or more. One Million Dollar Inductees Arthur Frampton, Biology and Marine Biology Robert Tyndall, Educational Leadership Robert Whitehead, Center for Marine Science Five Million Dollar Inductees Joe Pawlik, Biology and Marine Biology Wade Watanabe, Center for Marine Science The Ten Million Dollar Club, new this year, honors researchers that have received more than ten million dollars in sponsored funding.
