His laboratory uses shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels, crabs etc.) as model organisms in examining the effects of these stressors on cellular, biochemical, physiological and ecological responses of organisms, models these responses and provides resource managers with guidance on environmental management of rivers, estuaries and coastal areas. His expertise includes host-parasite interactions, pathophysiology and ecotoxicology of shellfish. Community outreach and engagement, and adaptive management in collaboration with resource managers are also significant components of his research. Dr. Volety was named dean of the UNC Wilmington (UNCW) College of Arts and Sciences in 2014. Before coming to UNCW, Dr. Volety served as the Interim Dean of Florida Gulf Coast University’s College of Arts and Sciences and as the Director of Vester Marine and Environmental Sciences Field Station. He is an accomplished scholar and has been funded by various federal, state and private agencies such as the National Research Council, National Science Foundation, Environmental Protection agency, Sea Grant, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. Accommodations for disabilities may be requested by contacting CMS three days prior to the event. Dr. Volety graduated from the College of William & Mary with a doctorate in marine science. He received his master’s degree in zoology with a specialization in marine biology and his bachelor of science degree from Andhra University in India. Volety also earned a graduate certificate in management development from the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University.
