For driving directions and more information about CMS: www.uncw.edu/cms with Lance Horn, Jason White and Glenn Taylor UNCW Center for Marine Science The UNCW Undersea Vehicles Program (UVP) was formed in 2010 after the National Undersea Research Center (NURC) lost federal funding and was dissolved in 2009. UVP is a part of the oceanographic operations division at UNCW's Center for Marine Science, and supports undersea research with a variety of robotic vehicles. These medium sized remotely operated vehicles (ROV) are “fly away” systems that can be deployed rapidly and are operated by two experienced staff. UVP is dedicated to providing efficient undersea intervention with experienced ROV and autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) support. With over 27 years of conducting undersea research, the UVP team possesses the skills and knowledge required to perform extensive end-to-end mission coordination and logistics, professional vehicle operations, and quality data collection. As NURC and UVP, the team has completed 2,448 ROV dives. We have completed 141 missions with 77 different principal investigators and worked on 48 different vessels. The longest ROV dive was 10.9 hours and the deepest ROV dive was 1030 ft deep. We have taken over 83,000 digital still pictures during the 3,056 hours we have spent on the seafloor with ROVs. Lance Horn received his A.S. in Underwater Technology from Florida Institute of Technology in 1984. In 1987, after working as a surface supplied diver, Lance became the chief ROV pilot for UNCW and is now Operations Director for UVP. Lance has been a part of 125 ROV missions with a total of 1,591 ROV dives, 12 AUV missions, 25 manned submersible missions, 83 scuba dive missions, 12 Aquarius saturation habitat missions, and 5 surface supplied diving missions. Jason White received his B.S. in Marine Science and Meteorology from N.C. State University in 2008. After graduation he worked as a hydrographic surveyor in the Gulf of Mexico conducting NOAA marine debris surveys and Oil & Gas surveys. He then worked as a satellite oceanographer in the commercial fishing industry before joining UVP in 2013 to replace Glenn Taylor after his retirement. Accommodations for disabilities may be requested by contacting CMS three days prior to the event. Glenn Taylor received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Clarkson College of Technology in 1969. Glenn came to work at UNCW in 1991 and has played many different roles while he was here including; Day-Boat Coordinator, Mission Coordinator, AUV Technician, and ROV Pilot/Technician. Glenn spent 17 years working with ROV’s before retiring in 2013. Bluefish Society membership entitles you to preferred seating at Planet Ocean seminars and much more.
