N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve:
Protected places for research, education and compatible public use
with Rebecca Ellin
Coastal Reserve Program Manager, NCNERR
The N.C. Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve protects more
than 42,000 acres of estuarine land and water across ten sites along the North
Carolina coast for research, education, natural resource
stewardship, and compatible public use. Four of these
sites (Currituck Banks, Rachel Carson, Masonboro Island,
and Zeke’s Island) comprise the N.C. National Estuarine
Research Reserve, one of 28 reserves in the National
Estuarine Research Reserve System, a network managed
by coastal states and the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Long-term research
and monitoring are conducted at these sites to enhance
understanding of ecological processes and inform coastal
management. Student, teacher, and public education
programs use these outdoor classrooms to increase
awareness of estuarine systems and our connections to
them. Adult professional training programs share
science-based information with decision-makers to inform decisions that impact
coastal and estuarine resources. Proper stewardship of the sites provides essential
habitat for plants and animals and platforms for research and education activities.
Reserve visitors enjoy birding, kayaking, boating, beach going, and wildlife viewing
at the sites as well as learning about these special places that represent the
diversity of N.C.’s coast.
Rebecca Ellin has led the N.C. Coastal Reserve and
National Estuarine Research Reserve since 2005. She has
an undergraduate degree in marine biology from the
College of Charleston and a Master of Science in marine
science from the University of South Carolina. In
addition to overseeing the research, education, and
stewardship programs of the Reserve, she recently has
served as the Chair of the N.C. Sentinel Site
Cooperative, a NOAA-initiated collaborative effort to
provide information on the potential impacts of sea level
rise on coastal habitats, and President of the National Estuarine Research Reserve
Association, the national not-for-profit organization that supports the National
Estuarine Research Reserve System.
