Responding to Climate Change:
The Planet Ocean Seminar
Series offers four lectures
each academic year, featuring
prominent speakers from our own
faculty and other leading research
institutions, from well-known
environmental organizations and
from government agencies.
The Planet Ocean Seminar Series is
free and open to the public. The
seminar is held in the Hodder Hall
of Mentors, the main auditorium
at the UNCW Center for Marine
Science, 5600 Marvin K. Moss
Lane. The seminar will begin
promptly at 6:30 p.m. Light
hors d’oeuvres will follow.
Due to limited seating,
reservations are required.
Advance registration for
Bluefish Society members
will end Mar. 21. The
general public may begin
registration on Mar. 22.

Exploring Future Scenarios
with Lawrence B. Cahoon, Ph.D.
Professor of Biology and Marine Biology

L
awrence Cahoon earned a B.S. in Biology (summa cum laude)
from Washington & Lee University in 1975 and a Ph.D. in
Zoology from Duke University in 1981. He held a postdoctoral
fellowship at Mountain Lake Biological Station with the University
of Virginia before joining the faculty in biological sciences at the
University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) in 1982. Dr. Cahoon
is currently Professor of Biology and Marine Biology and teaches
courses in biological oceanography, limnology,
and environmental science. His research interests
include many aspects of coastal oceanography,
freshwater ecology, water quality issues, climate
change effects on coastal ecosystems, and the
intersection of environmental law and science.
Dr. Cahoon has served on several state boards and
advisory groups, including the North Carolina Marine
Science Council, the North Carolina Ocean Affairs
Council, a legislative study subcommittee on offshore energy resources,
and, as chair, the North Carolina Ocean Resources Task Force. He has
been honored by the UNCW community as the recipient of the Faculty
Scholarship Award in 2006 and the Graduate Mentor Award in 2010.
