THE COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY
University of Saskatchewan

Acting Dean:
Dr. James Stakiw
Associate Dean:
Dr. Dean Kolbinson
If you read something in this issue of Recall that you would like

issue of the newsletter will be published in February, 2005.
DEAN’S MESSAGE …..
Dr. Stakiw
goal encouraged by the Administration
of the University of Saskatchewan. It
is too early to speculate on what this
merger will look like. One possibility is
that the College will become a School
of Dental Medicine, a school which,
from preliminary indications, will be
autonomous and self-regulatory.
On July 30, University of Saskatchewan
Provost,
Michael
Atkinson,
distributed to all faculty and staff
in the College a document entitled
“Mandate for Future Directions
for the College of Dentistry”. The
document is comprised of four
sections in an Action Plan:
But the merger as a goal necessitates the College
of Dentistry must accomplish certain fiscal and
managerial efficiencies and successes along the
way and these issues, largely mandated by the
University Administration, require that at the
time of merger, no structural or other deficits
would exist. Of course, in the four parts of the
document listed above, a whole host of other
issues will be addressed.
1. Vision and Business Plan
2. Culture/Climate
3. Structure/Accountabilities
4. Systems/Processes
While there have been other planning and
direction documents before the College in
the past, eg. The 1998-99 Business Plan, this
mandate document would appear to be “the big
one” since it sets out guidelines and a pathway
to follow for success toward the ultimate goal
which is a faculty approved merger of the College
of Dentistry with the College of Medicine, a
The University Administration has indicated by
the time and effort it has devoted to the process
of evaluation and preparation of the document

itself that it intends the College of Dentistry to
survive and thrive in the future. It sees this as
best occurring within the College of Medicine for
several reasons, eg. a new research mandate of
the University which the College cannot comply
with on its own, new financial contingencies within
the University, etc. Probably reasons no different
than those which have led to the merger of other
Faculties of Dentistry with Medicine, eg. University
of Western Ontario, University of Alberta, etc.
Dr. Charles Baker has stepped down from his
position as Dean in the College, but will continue
as a faculty member in Dentistry and as the Project
Leader for the Academic Health Sciences Centre.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr.
Baker for his hard work and efforts while guiding
the College over the past few years.
I assumed the deanship on an acting basis for a
two-year period effective August 1, 2004. Having
taught in the College at its very beginning when
Dr. Jack Paynter was the Dean, I have some long
term historical connection with this College and
I, along with everyone else, cares that it survives
and continues to provide first class practitioners
to serve society. We will do our part to ensure this
happens.
Let there be no doubt that at no time has there
been question on the part of the University
Administration as to the long term viability of the
College of Dentistry and to this end, it is seconding
senior personnel in finance and human resources
to serve on a transition team which includes the
Dean of the College of Dentistry as well as the
Manager of Finance and Administration of the
College. This team will address the issues in the
mandate document and provide plans of action.
As is mentioned in the Mandate document, it is
essential that we establish a list of potential full
time faculty to ensure continuity in our teaching
program and to this end, we are undertaking a
recruitment process for full time faculty to ensure
that we maintain an appropriate level of specialists
to deliver our Program. If you – or someone you
may know – are interested in pursuing an academic
career with us, I would invite you to contact me, in
the strictest confidence, directly at (306) 966-5121,
or by writing to me at the College or by email to
James.Stakiw@usask.ca.
The merger with Medicine must be achieved
within a two year period. The seriousness of the
task should not be underestimated.
I believe everyone associated with the College of
Dentistry is up to the task and our alumni will be
called upon to help out as they can to ensure that
their alma mater is provided with resources to
ensure a first class education, dentally, medically,
and clinically for our students.
James E. Stakiw, D.M.D., Dip. Perio., Ph. D., F.I.C.D.
VISITING STUDENTS FROM JAPAN
The College is pleased to have two visiting students
from Okayama University Dental School in
Okayama, Japan. The students will be here under
an exchange agreement between the Okayama
University School of Dentistry and our own
College of Dentistry. The names of the students
are Mayumi Ishii and Haruka Hori. The students
will be here for a period of ten weeks from August
23 to October 31 and will be observing the clinical
procedures of our program and participating in
various lectures.
The College welcomes Mayumi and Haruka!

CONNECTIONS ……
THANK YOU DR. PEACOCK!
On the evening of May 29, 2004,
approximately 250 guests attended
a retirement dinner recognizing Dr.
George Peacock, a dentist known by all
of the alumni of the College of Dentistry
at the University of Saskatchewan.
Guests from Victoria to Halifax were
in attendance to wish him well in his
retirement, following thirty years in the
capacity as the Secretary/Registrar/
Treasurer of the College of Dental
Surgeons of Saskatchewan.
Tributes were given to Dr. Peacock
by his son Cameron, on behalf of
the family, and by representatives
of various groups and associations
that Dr. Peacock has presided over,
or chaired a committee, including
the Canadian Dental Association,
the Western Canada Dental Society,
the College of Dental Surgeons of
Saskatchewan, the St. Paul’s Hospital
Foundation Board, the Saskatchewan
Institute of Prevention of Handicaps,
the Saskatoon Hilltop Football Club,
and the Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon.
Representing the College of Dentistry
was Dr. Charles Baker who noted
that Dr. Peacock will continue his
association with the College of
Dentistry in a part-time teaching
capacity.
Dr. Peacock’s association with the
College of Dentistry dates back to
1970 when he was asked to be a
part-time instructor in the area of
restorative dentistry. Subsequently,
he became a part time instructor
in pedodontics, and since 1978 has
lectured each class on the Dental Act,
Ethics, and Jurisprudence. Committee
wise he has served for many years
on the Executive Committee and the
Admissions Committee, and is also
a member of the Undergraduate
Education Committee. Dr. Peacock
has worked with every Dean our
College of Dentistry has had, from
our first Dean, Dr. Jack Paynter, to the
current Dean.
Equally notable, Dr. Peacock initiated
the annual graduating students’
breakfast which recognizes each
student graduating from the College
of Dentistry.
A friend, confrere to all of our students,
Dr. Peacock has acted in a consulting
capacity to many of our graduates,
both on a business and personal level,
as they knew if they had problems
or concerns that they could freely
approach him on a confidential level.
Accordingly, many of our graduates
attended his recognition dinner to
express their appreciation to him for
being who he was. In responding
to the presentation, Dr. Peacock
commented that some of the finest
dentists and human beings he had
ever met, were graduates from our
College, and we should always hold
our heads high in recognition of the
quality of our education.
4
Particular thanks to Dr. Peacock were
expressed to him by College President,
Dr. Brian Baker, who assisted in the
unveiling of a portrait of Dr. Peacock,
to be placed in the College of Dental
Surgeons of Saskatchewan office, and
who also informed the guests that a
Dr. George Peacock Scholarship had
been established by the Council.
A great evening for a life long friend and
supporter of the College of Dentistry!

MA NAGEMENT TIPS…..
Even if you’re not interested in doing
business over the web, you should
seriously consider getting a web site
for your business. It’s a great way of
letting your potential customers know
you exist.
One way to establish your business
on-line is to have a site that acts like
your business brochure. It gives
information about what you do, and
what you offer, and, most importantly,
how to reach you by phone, by e-mail,
or at your office.
Ten Tips to
Success on the Web
1. Don’t make your home page
(the first page) a mystery. Make it
informative – who you are and what
you do should be clear. Put your
name, address, and logo on every
page of your site. If possible, make
the logo the link back to the home
page.
2. Make it easy to find your phone
number so people can call you…..
Getting On-Line
From The Canadian Small
Business Handbook
3. If your site is large – more than 50
pages – provide the ability to search
the site.
4. Be straightforward. Keep your
language simple and user friendly.
Not everyone understands the lingo
of your business and industry; write
to the lowest common denominator
to attract the most customer
prospects. Make the titles and
headlines tell the story clearly of what
the page contains.
5. Make the pages easy to read so
that people accessing the site can
quickly scan them. Use lots of space.
Don’t clutter up the page. Group
information using bold words and
headings.
6. Avoid long scrolling pages; only
10% of people go beyond what
they see on the screen. Keep the
best content at the top of the page.
Instead of cramming it all onto
one page, use links to structure the
content so readers can get the detail
they need quickly.
7. Invite people to e-mail you, but set
the response areas so their messages
can be a maximum number of words.
You don’t want to be inundated with
lots of long messages.
8. Under-promise and over-deliver.
Put a message on the web site that
you’ll respond to e-mails in 48 or 72
hours. Then get back to them within
24 or 48 hours – you’ll look good.
9. Keep your site current. You’ll lose
the ability to attract repeat visitors
if your information is out of date or
inaccurate.
10. If any part of your site takes
longer than 10 seconds to load, you’ll
lose visitors. That’s the maximum
time people will wait for a page to
download. When you have your site
tested by friends, ask them to check
how long they have to wait for the site
to fully load.

CALGARY ALUMNI GROUP
Submitted by Dr. Kristin Yont
On June 17 the first alumni meeting for
the College of Dentistry, University of
Saskatchewan, was held at the Glencoe
Club in Calgary. It was nice to have
both young and more experienced
dentists gather for an evening of
appetizers, cocktails, and alumni
brainstorming. It was really nice to see
the tremendous interest from the Calgary
Dental Alumni to get together and socialize.
By the end of the evening it was decided by all in
attendance that it was important to develop an alumni
group that would get together once or twice a year for
social and educational purposes. The specific details
have not been confirmed, but the next social event
is being planned for Thursday, October 21,
2004.
It will be an Octoberfest celebration.
Special thanks to Mr. John Niedermaier
who was a guest at the June 17 meeting
and who shared ideas and information
about the activities of the U of S Calgary
Engineering Alumni Group.
We would also like to thank Donna Wilson from
Straumann Canada, and Melissa Klassen from SciCan
for fully sponsoring the event. Also, thank you to Dr.
Rick Edwards for trusting us with his account at the
Glencoe Club where the event took place!

2004. Dr. Sotnikow graduated from the College of
Dentistry, University of Saskatchewan, in 1975 with
Great Distinction and the Gold Foil Award. He was
a sessional lecturer at the College and it is said that
he humbly admitted that he put most of his students
to sleep!
He will be missed and fondly remembered by those
who knew and loved him.
... DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING
Dr. Angela Mulrooney, DMD ‘04
began ballroom dancing with
the University of Saskatchewan
Ballroom Dancing Club (U of S
BDC) in the fall of 1998 when
she started University. By the
spring of 2000, she was asked to
audition to become an instructor.
Being focused on getting into
the College of Dentistry, she
declined the offer, but remained
a member of the club and
participated in student group
performances. That summer she
applied to Milette’s Dance Class
Inc. in Regina – hoping to land a
summer job there. Unfortunately,
she was not hired since she was
returning to school in Saskatoon
in the fall in the DMD program with
the U of S College of Dentistry. That
summer, she met Michael Milette and
his wife, Susan Hill - Michael would
eventually become her dance partner.
The unfathomable happened at the
end of February 2003. A month away
from an anticipated performance,
she fell on ice on campus - fracturing
her right tibia and fibula. Unable to
do a closed reduction, surgery was
performed and eight pins and a plate
were placed to stabilize the fractures.
By the beginning of June, she was
starting to walk with a less noticeable
limp and started training on the dance
floor again. By the end of June, she
started training with her current dance
partner, Michael Milette.
In October of 2003, competing as an
amateur, she took the award for top
solo performance at the Moonlight
& Roses showcase in Saskatoon. In
February of 2004, she took top solo
performance at Milette’s Showcase
in Regina – a week before writing her
National Dental Examining Board
licensure exam. At the Calgary Open Dance
Competition in May, 2004, she won five first
places for her rhythm events (chacha, rhumba,
samba, mambo, swing) and took first place in the
open multidance event (chacha, rhumba, swing).
Calgary was her last amateur event. With graduation
from the college looming at the end of May, 2004,
and the fact that the majority of her class had never
seen her in performance or competition events,
Angela decided to perform at the graduation banquet.
Decked out in full costume, make-up, and hair, she
and Michael wowed the crowd with three of their most
popular routines.
The following year, she was again approached
to audition for and was offered an instructor position.
By Christmas of 2001, she was performing in front
of the club with a fellow instructor. In the spring of
2002, she surprised the club with a mambo routine
performed in a racy costume and cropped, flamingorange hair. She and her partner at the time hoped
to compete at the amateur level at the Calgary Open
2002, but tendonitis in both ankles - due to overtraining - prevented this from happening.
Through the summer of 2002, she took the
occasional private lesson at a Saskatoon dance
school and looked forward to competing at the
amateur level in February of 2003 at Milette’s
Showcase. However, plagued by repetitive injuries
and a recently subluxated hip, the dream of
competing was not realized.
Since graduation, she has moved to Regina to train
closer to her professional dance partner and be a
principal instructor at the studio. Angela is teaching
private and group classes and workshops. She and
Michael are also doing hired performances and will
be competing at the professional level in the fall.
7
Besides dancing, Angela is practicing as an associate
at Eastend Dental in Regina.

THE FOLLOWING STUDY IS CURRENTLY BEING UNDERTAKEN IN OUR COLLEGE:
Project Title:
A Randomised
Controlled Trial
of Pharmacological
Adjuncts to
General Anesthesia
in Pediatric
Dentistry
Area of Research – Anesthesia
Project Description:
Small children with extensive
carious dental disease require dental
restoration under general anesthesia
(GA) that often includes pulpotomies,
Stainless Steel Crowns and extractions.
Although they could be expected to
have little or no post-operative pain,
aside from minor gum irritation from
clamps, rubber dams, etc. their postoperative course is often marred by
vomiting (35%), prolonged crying,
and emergence agitation (18%). A
number of pharmacologic adjuncts to
general anesthesia are used according
to anesthesiologist’s preference to
ameliorate these problems, but they
have not been systematically studied.
Hypothesis:
Intravenous morphine, dexamethasone,
granisetron, or all three, will result
in smoother emergence from dental
restoration under general anesthesia
in children, as measured by length of
crying, by episodes of vomiting, and by
episodes of emergence agitation.

please contact Dr. Carol Nagle.

AND THE WINNERS ARE…
Submitted by: Dr. Ric Devon
The annual Table Clinic night has again come and
gone and the results are now being regaled to the
annals of the history of the College. But before we
get too engrossed in the here and now, let us spend
a brief minute to reflect on the achievements of the
3rd Year class as they parried and thrust to win over
the anonymous judges. On the second Tuesday
of April, 12 teams of anxious students repeatedly
presented the results of their research project that
they had worked on over the previous 4 months
(OK, for some it was 3 weeks!). When the dust had
settled and the judges had made their final decision
(they really had a difficult time selecting from 4
different posters), Dr. Raj Bhargava announced the
winners - Mark Venditti and Kyle Egger (shown in
photo) for their presentation “Persistence of
Epithelial Rests of Malassez in Adult Human Molar:
A preliminary study”
Time Differences for Film-Based and Digital Imaging
in the Dental Practice”. Congrats to both teams.
Mark and Kyle will now present their work at the
CDA/FDI World conference next year, to be held in
Montreal. – Good luck guys!

WELCOME! CLASS OF 2008
FRIDAY, AUGUST 20, 2004…….…
ORIENTATION DAY…......
The newest class to enter the Program has now
arrived. We are delighted to welcome these twentyeight students as they begin the journey that will
ultimately culminate with a DMD in 2008.
This is an exciting time in the lives of each of these
students and the entire College will participate in
helping to make each of them feel comfortable and
at home! The fact is – this will be their home for the
next four years and we all want to ensure that the
experience is more memorable than they could ever
have imagined!
An official welcome, with introductions, took place
in DC334/335. Then everyone gathered on the Clinic
Floor where the Year 1 class recited the Code of
Professional Conduct. This was followed by the White
Coat Ceremony and then the official class photo.
Tours and pizza lunch wrapped up the morning
activities.
LIFE
is not measured by
the number of breaths
we take, but by the moments
that take our breath away.
CODE OF PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
The College of Dentistry is a community comprising students,
faculty and staff dedicated to personal and academic excellence.
Choosing to join this community obligates each one of us to
adhere to a code of professional behavior and gives us the right
to be challenged to learn, but not to be abused, harassed or
humiliated.
Membership in this community is not without obligation.
Accordingly, I have adopted the following statement of principles
to guide me throughout my academic, clinical and research
work. I will uphold both the spirit and the letter of this code.
As a member of the dental community:
• I will practice personal and academic integrity.
• I will respect the rights and dignity of patients, students,
faculty, and support staff and treat all persons with
honesty, respect, fairness and compassion.
• I will not make disparaging remarks about students,
faculty, or support staff or their work.
• I will place the well being of patients ahead of personal
advancement.
• I will set patient care as the highest priority in the
clinical setting.
• I will maintain patient confidentiality and will limit
discussions of patients to appropriate settings.
• I will maintain high standards of ethical behavior and
conduct myself in a manner befitting my profession
at all times.

A politician awoke in a hospital bed
after a complicated operation, and found
that the curtains were drawn around him.
“Why are the curtains closed.” he said. “Is it night?”
A nurse replied, “No, it’s just that there is a fire
across the street, and we didn’t want you waking up
and thinking the operation was unsuccessful.”
The 10th annual International Dental Student
Conference 2005 will be hosted in Saskatoon!
