Dean’s Message Dr. Gerry Uswak
So, in real world terms, what does this mean for the
College of Dentistry?
There is sometimes a perception, often expressed as an
accusation, that universities are isolated little islands
unconnected to the real world and its issues. However,
as is the case with so many sweeping generalizations,
this one quite simply is wrong. A perfect example of
this is the spinoffs from the current and ongoing global
financial crisis. The University and our College are not
isolated from its effects; in fact, we are being impacted
in a very real world way.
The most direct answer to the question – what does this
mean – is that our College has been asked to reduce
its operating budget by 10 percent, or $ 556,000.00.
I won’t dwell on where that ranks us amongst other
U of S colleges, but suffice it to say we have the highest
percentage adjustment of any college and we are in
the top five in terms of absolute dollar adjustments.
So now, the more important question is how are we going
to make these adjustments without negatively impacting
our program, faculty, staff, and patients? Believe me, that
question has now been turned
over countless times but no
matter how many times or
ways we ask it, one reality we
have to accept with regard to
this adjustment is that
we have no choice. We
have to make these
budget changes or
they will be made for
us. And we also
have to remember
that crisis can
be a catalyst for
change because
it forces us to
look inwardly, ask
hard questions,
and find
While the University receives funding from the
province by way of a grant, its financing also depends
on endowment funds that are supported through the
generosity of alumni and through business ventures.
This income is invested in much the same way as
we build our personal financial portfolios. We walk a
tightrope balancing higher rates of return when financial
markets are good against the risk of loss when those
same markets decline.
The recent global financial crisis has negatively impacted
the value of the University’s endowment investments,
which means the University needs to reduce its operating
budget by 10 million dollars in order to ensure that it
meets commitments such as keeping its employee
pension plans solvent. In turn, each college and
administrative unit has been given permanent budget
adjustment targets to be implemented over the next two
years, beginning with this fiscal year. And instead of
spreading the adjustments equally across campus, the
University decided to ask certain colleges and units to
“adjust” more than others.
2
innovative solutions. The University has further made it
clear that our challenge, beyond the budget reductions, is
to develop new strategic directions to enable our program
to be stronger and more innovative over time.
The obvious question now facing us is: Where does the
College “find” $556,000.00? I will try and answer this
clearly and frankly.
We will eliminate two non-teaching staff positions, which
translates into savings of approximately $100,000.00
annually. While the job duties can be reassigned, we
will have to say goodbye to people who are part of our
extended College family, which is never easy. This is one
of the indirect costs of budget adjustments: the real world
impact of losing one’s job.
The rest of the budget adjustment will be attained through
a combination of tuition rises and tuition equalization.
With respect to raising tuition, the simple fact is that
there is no other way and it has to be part of our plan.
Look at any other dental school across North America
and it will have tuition fees far higher than any other of
its campus peers. Dental education is expensive because
we need more than just classrooms in which to educate
our students. We operate a dental teaching hospital
and maintaining that clinical infrastructure is very costly.
Moreover, unlike Medicine and Nursing, we do not
receive significant funding from the Ministry of Health
because (and in our opinion, absurdly) dentistry is not
considered to be (and thus is not funded as) part of the
formal health care system. With the tuition rise will come
a new tuition-revenue sharing agreement between the
College and the University so that more of those dollars
can be reinvested into our programs. We also have asked
for support in petitioning to have Canada Student Loan
ceilings raised in order to reduce students’ reliance on
lines of credit from financial institutions where they have
to make interest payments while still in school.
Tuition equalization is one innovative strategy to improve
the College’s financial picture. Currently, the College
provides collectively one million dollars (taken from
tuition revenues) to the top 15 academically ranked
Dentistry students in each year. Thus a total of sixty
students over Years 1 – 4 each receive a “Saskatchewan
Scholarship” of $18,000.00. However, this is a flawed
model. The scholarships are not provided in our base
funding from Government and the University. Rather
they are taken out of our own total tuition revenues, so
students are supporting the scholarships for other
students. Tuition equalization will eliminate the
Saskatchewan Scholarships and, after using a portion
for the budget adjustment, will reinvest the dollars into
the College to benefit all students. Students currently
receiving the scholarship will continue to do so until they
graduate so the reinvestment potential will grow over
the next four years. We will lobby Government to provide
tuition bursaries for dental students as they do for all
other health science professional students. In fact, the
budget adjustment situation fast-tracks the approval of
tuition equalization, which is to our benefit, so promise
can rise out of adversity.
Other initiatives that represent new strategic directions
will be the hiring of a College of Dentistry Development
Officer and establishing a community dental clinic on
Saskatoon’s west side. The Development Officer will be
the point person for our alumni relations and a big part
of that job will be to increase donations to the College
from business and alumni. We need to do a better job of
keeping the College’s alumni and friends connected and
actively engaged in our programs. Alumni and friends:
Without you our program will suffer, but with you it is
strong. If we can count on and build on that strength, we
will continue to provide dental education that is second
to none.
The west-side community clinic, which is described later
in this edition of Recall, is a significant step toward a
distributive learning model in which students receive
their core training at the College and the Dental Teaching
Hospital and then radiate out to rural, urban, and northern
locales to provide dental care for people facing accessto-care barriers and oral health disparities. The College
provides more direct service to the community than does
any other Health Science college and we want to expand
on that. Aspects of the program also are resonant of
the five-year program, wherein our students travelled
and worked worldwide. This is invaluable experience
that builds not only clinical competency but also a better
understanding of patients in a variety of social settings.
This College has a rich history for it relatively young age.
Adversity and challenge have often been a part of that
history, but we always have responded with perseverance.
I truly believe we now are on the cusp of change, and
that out of these budget adjustments will come strength.
Time will tell.

SWITCH (Student Wellness Initiative Toward Community
Health) first opened its doors on October 12, 2005. This
student-run, interdisciplinary primary health care centre
provides primary health care, health promotion, and
education to Saskatoon’s core neighborhoods. Students
from fields including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy,
Physiotherapy, Psychology, Nursing, and Social Work
have the opportunity to work outside the university
environment in a team-oriented, service-based, and
community-centered fashion. SWITCH, originally an
initiative of Health Science students, now acts as a
common ground for the joint efforts of students from
the Colleges listed above, the community, and community organizations.
Currently, dental services are provided out of the White
Buffalo Youth Lodge located across from the Westside
Community Clinic on 20th Street, every second Saturday
of the month from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM. For part of the
year, services also were provided from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM
on every fourth Wednesday of the month. At present we
provide basic emergency, preventative, periodontic, and
8
operative procedures, and it is our intention eventually
to expand on these basic dental services. Because of
general growing interest and participation in SWITCH,
there is optimism that the dental arm of SWTICH soon
will be open for four sessions per month. [Ed. note:
See associated article “College of Dentistry Saskatoon
Westside Community Clinic" on page 32.]
There is a need for dentist mentors to supervise dental
students in order to expand the number of dental clinic
sessions. And if you would like to contribute and cannot be
a mentor, then donations of dental supplies, instruments,
and equipment would be greatly appreciated. SWITCH
also accepts monetary donations. Any donations are taxdeductible and SWITCH provides receipts. If you would
like to contribute in the above or any other ways or if you
have any questions, please contact me, Daryn Bikey, at
717-9997 (dab050@mail.usask.a) or Dr. Francisco Otero
at 966-5069 (f.otero@usask.ca).

Men’s Marathon Winner Brian Michasiw (L) and Dr. David Stark
The Saskatchewan Marathon has become one of western
Canada’s premiere road races and now attracts nearly
2,500 participants, so the event couldn’t possibly be run
without the support of nearly 400 volunteers and countless
spectators along the route. The course for the three
distances (10 Km, half-marathon [21.1 Km], and marathon
[42.2 Km]) makes good use of some of Saskatoon’s
most attractive features: the roads and pathways of the
Meewasin Valley, the beautiful University of Saskatchewan
campus, historic residential neighbourhoods, the unique
footbridge across the South Saskatchewan River at the
Circle Drive Bridge, and two other historic traffic bridges
in the city.

Congratulations to all of you on your achievement! It’s
now time to start planning and training for next year’s
event. The 32nd Saskatchewan Marathon will be held
on Sunday, May 30, 2010.
Each year, people of all ages and from a diversity of
occupations and vocations walk or run one of the three
distances. The dental profession has been well represented
annually, and this year was no exception.

Dr. Devon Anholt (Class of 2007) served for two years in many disciplines as an Assistant Professor in our College of Dentistry.
He has now taken an educational leave to pursue orthodontics at the University of Alberta.
His father, Dr. Reg Anholt (Class of 1976), has been in private practice in Saskatoon for over thirty years and throughout those
years has continuously served the Dental College in a part-time capacity. He has compiled a book of case studies and treatment
planning that he loves to share with anyone who is interested. The book is entitled Lessons I Have Learned: From: Someone
“long in the tooth,” To: Those “cutting their first teeth.”
The following reflection was submitted
to Recall by Dr. Anholt, Sr.
Devon did not exactly follow in my
footsteps, so I guess I am following
in his! Judging from the reports that I
have received from both students and
fellow faculty members, he left some
big shoes to fill. And meanwhile, for
me, retirement quite simply has never
been an option. I love dentistry—you
could say it’s like a hobby. Why would
I want to quit my hobby?
Therefore, I was very honoured when
I was approached in 2008 to see if
I would be interested in a full-time
faculty position at the U of S College
of Dentistry. Those hiring envisioned
a staff comprising generalists
surrounded by specialists, with a
model of comprehensive care in
contrast to the traditional procedurebased system. This proposal was
close to my heart. It has always
been my belief that students should
be evaluated and “get credit” for
managing the total oral health and
not just “get a credit” for having
learned a procedure. Having been
cross-trained in the many facets of
dentistry, my hope was to provide
an interdisciplinary style of treatment
planning; dare I say, a common-sense
approach to patient care.
Well, the term has begun, and I’ll
first say how impressed I am by
the calibre of students here. I also
immediately noticed how supportive
the students are of one another,
evident at occasions from orientation activities like tossing the football
around, to their speeches at the Fall
Welcome, to the way they support
each other on the clinic floor. And
the students seem so appreciative of
any help that you provide. I am
finding my work at the College to be
very fulfilling; in fact, a dream job.
Being here this fall has rekindled
memories from my own student
experience at the U of S, and of
our student exchanges with
other western Canadian
dental colleges.
We
always were so proud,
and considered our
College to be the
best! Think about it:
situated in Saskatoon,
the prettiest place on
the prairies; and the
College itself located
in one of the most
beautiful campuses
in Canada, and
offering a
terrific dental
facility
14
under the leadership of a permanent
Dean and a reinvigorated Associate
Dean, backed by a supportive staff
and a solid faculty comprising an
ideal blend of experience with the
fresh energy of new faculty, and all
complemented by an enthusiastic
group of part-time clinicians, each
with his and her individual strengths.
Students: You must use these
opportunities!
Learn from the best . . . to be the best
that you can be . . . for the best of your
patients: That would be my mantra.
Sure, there are challenges, but with
a great team, a common
purpose, and everyone
pulling in the same
direction, we can
continue to graduate
dentists who are a
credit to this great
profession.
And
I’m here to help.

Welcome to the
Class of 2013!
staff were on site during the first two weeks to train the
students on the new software and assist with the first
patient clinic days. During this time, the assistance of the
students who had been employed during the Summer
Clinic was invaluable.
At that time, axiUm was made available at a limited
number of operatories within the Main Clinic as well
as at support staff stations in the Front Office. The
Summer Clinic began with providers entering current
patient information into the system, then progressed to
recording treatment of patients, for which the software
performed successfully over the summer months. The
limited number of providers and students allowed the
project team to reconfigure the system quickly when
difficulties were encountered.
First- and second-year students are now using axiUm.
Although they are not treating patients, they are practicing
with the software using “typodont” patients in the
Simulation Lab. They also will be entering information
as they begin to practice their skills using fellow dental
students as patients.
To date, the dental students have been pleased with the
progress made on axiUm. One commented, "The new
axiUm system has provided a challenge for students,
for staff, and for part-time faculty. In a profession that
demands on-the-spot learning and quick thinking, axiUm
has provided a unique opportunity to learn these valuable
skills."
During the summer, other work continued within the
College to prepare for the use of axiUm for the fall
academic session. This included:
Work on the new system will continue during the fall/
winter sessions. Although there is a lot of change
involved, the entire team is working together to eliminate
dual effort in many areas. This ongoing work includes:
• All remaining operatories in the Main Clinic were
outfitted with computer equipment, as well as
those in Oral Surgery, the First Floor Clinic, and
the Third Floor Clinic.
• In addition to those for the more common righthanded providers, there was installation of selected
operatories to support left-handed providers.
• Faculty and staff offices were equipped with network
lines and axiUm software.
• Documentation was written on processes in
the Front Office.
• Swipe card readers were installed in the operatories
to allow faculty and instructors to approve and
grade student work.
• Additional equipment such as signature pads for
patient consents and tablets for drawing on lab
forms was also purchased and configured.
• Consultation with clinic faculty and staff continued,
with documentation of processes and configuration
of new reports to enable the clinics to function
effectively.
• Automatic updates to Dental Clinic computers
were set up to allow installation of updates as they
are released by Exan or Microsoft.
• Continuing to add new or updated reports
as required
• Refining current processes to make effective use
of the new software, and/or configuring axiUm
to run more efficiently
• Purchasing and configuring computers for the

• Completing work on a system that will allow faculty
with Macintosh computers to attach to axiUm
• Implementing the Self-Check-In Kiosk in the
patient waiting area
• Reconfiguring the Front Office to serve patients
better
Once the current axiUm software has been fully
configured, work will continue next summer and beyond
to make the system even more effective including:
• Adding bar codes to paper charts to make scanning
the charts in and out more efficient
• Implementing the Dispensary module after it
becomes available in March 2010
On August 24, 2009, the software was introduced to
the third- and fourth-year student populations. Exan

Last May two of our students, Erin Ellis (Class of 2009) and Nicole
Adams (Class of 2009), volunteered with the “Caring for Kids Where
They Live” program. This new program is a multidisciplinary initiative
drawing together the Colleges of Nursing, Dentistry, and Kinesiology
along with Community Schools to understand and improve health for
children. Our students worked alongside third-year Nursing students
to provide oral health education and dental screenings to children
in pre-kindergarten to grade 8 at St. Frances Elementary School and
to highschoolers at E. D. Feehan High School. This collaborative
approach allowed our students to apply their skills and knowledge
and to learn from other professions about how to approach health
from a social aspect.

my highest amount ever! Our team consisted of nine
people this year and we raised over $7,072 (fifth highest
overall for teams). I came in third overall for individual
fundraising with a total of $4,786. I would like to thank
everyone who donated or who attended the steak night

me, and I realize that I could not do it without all of your
support. I already look forward to the 2010 Walk!”

O
n September 12, 2009, the Royal College of
Dentists of Canada (RCDC) held its annual
convocation in Ottawa.
The RCDC administers the national dental specialty
examinations for all dental specialists in Canada.
Completion of an accredited graduate specialty
training program and passing this examination are
two requirements toward eligibility for licensing as
a specialist anywhere in Canada.
At the convocation ceremony, RCDC Fellowships
were awarded to individuals who had passed the
National Dental Specialty Examination in his or
her specialty, applied for Fellowship status, and
successfully met the other criteria. They may now
use the designation FRCD(C) after their names.

was not able to be present, and so received his
Fellowship in absentia. Sincerest congratulations
are extended to these individuals.
Other College of Dentistry, University of
Saskatchewan, alumni who attended the
convocation and ceremony were Dr. Rob Barsky
(Class of 1982), Dr. Lorne Koroluk (Class of 1982),
and Dr. Garnet Packota (Class of 1978). Dr. Barsky
is currently the RCDC Councilor for Pediatric

clINIcs
On April 14, 2009, students, staff, and faculty enjoyed an afternoon of Table Clinics presented by teams of Year 3
dental students. The best four presentations were chosen from the afternoon session and presented that evening at
the Faculty Club, where a winner was selected. The College of Dentistry acknowledges and appreciates sponsorship
from the Saskatoon and District Dental Society for the evening dinner.

F
or many years the College has planned to
build a community-based dental clinic in
Saskatoon both to enhance the clinical
learning of our students and also to improve
access to care for those who need it the
most. While our dental teaching hospital
remains our core clinical facility, we realize
that this means our patients must come to
us and for many in the community, this is
not possible. So this new clinic means that
the College will now go to the community.
This is part of the enhancement of our
distributive learning model, which will see
our students work in diverse settings in
rural, urban, and northern locations.
We thought we had the ideal site with
the proposed Station 20 West (see
Recall April 2008, April 2007, April
2006), a project that represented an
innovative inter-professional health
and social services centre, but timing
and politics resulted in the project’s
being cancelled. We continued to
work with the Westside Community
Clinic, who were searching for a new
location because they had outgrown
the space in their current west-side
location. Earlier this year the Clinic
approached us with a proposal for
us to locate our clinic in their new
location. They had purchased a
building at 1528 20th Street West,
between Avenues O and P just east
of St. Paul’s Hospital. They will take
over the building – which is currently
a medical clinic – in April 2010, with
a plan to have services start in
Summer 2010. In addition to the
Westside Clinic’s programs there
will be involvement by the Saskatoon
Health Region and the College of
Medicine, and it will become the
new home of SWITCH (Student Wellness Initiative Towards Community
Health).
We have 1370 square feet within which
to build an eight-chair clinic. We
envision a minimum of five students
working on a daily basis, and we
are discussing the relocation of the
Saskatoon Health Region’s dental
therapist from the Westwinds Clinic
to ours. We also would like to rotate
our hospital-based dental general
practice residents through this
clinic. We even foresee volunteers
from the dental community working
here, not only supervising our
students but also providing clinical
and preventive care.
This initiative represents a significant
step toward integrating oral and
systemic health care. We finally will
have a clinical infrastructure that
will both enable our students to
become full-fledged providers in the
SWITCH program and also enable
other health professions students to
gain first-hand experience about the
importance of oral health.
Stay tuned for more details as they
develop.
