Office of International Programs Scholarships and Awards Betsy Ervin Memorial Scholarship This scholarship, in the amount of $750, is dedicated in memory of Dr. Betsy Ervin, who served as the Swansea program faculty leader in Spring 2006. Students who are participating in UNCW’s Spring semester study abroad program at Swansea University in Wales are eligible to apply. Applicants should complete a 250 word essay about why they are deserving of this scholarship, and how, if selected, they would help promote the Swansea program to potential future applicants. Philip Melling Scholarship The Philip Melling Scholarship in International Programs was established in memory of Dr. Melling, founder of the American Studies Department in Swansea University in Wales. It was under his leadership that several academic exchanges with American universities, including UNCW, were established. This merit-based special achievement scholarship is for an undergraduate student that has been accepted into the Swansea, Wales program. The UNCW-Swansea program began in 1986 and is the longest running study abroad program at UNCW. Parrish-Betts Travel Award The Parrish-Betts Travel Award was created by Elizabeth Betts in honor of her grandparents, Alice and John Parrish. This merit-based award supports UNCW’s efforts to graduate global citizens by providing an opportunity for students to broaden their experience through study abroad. Preference will be given to graduate or undergraduate students who have demonstrated an interest in Africa or Asia, and have applied to study abroad on a spring UNCW-approved semester or summer study abroad program with a minimum duration of 4 weeks. Frank and his children in loving memory of their wife and mother, Sandra Koza Frank, this scholarship supports UNCW’s efforts to graduate global citizens. Thanks to the Franks’ generosity, more students will be given the opportunity to participate in cultural immersion programs. This merit-based award is available to UNCW students participating in credit-bearing, university-approved study abroad programs or international ESL, exchange, or degree-seeking students. Recipients will be selected on the basis of demonstrated academic ability and special achievement. Funding may vary but awards will usually be between $500 and $1000. Stella Doran International Studies Award This special award is presented in memory of Stella Doran and her husband Edward by their son Dr. Guy Doran. The Dorans, citizens of Wilmington and the world, enjoyed travel and serving the community with compassion and generosity of spirit. In order to treasure their memory and to support study abroad opportunities for travel-loving students, the Dorans are contributing over $25,000 for UNCW students with financial needs and high merit. Rising juniors and seniors with at least a 3.0 GPA, demonstrated financial need, and who are applying for a semester or full-year education abroad program may apply.
