April in Europe Study Abroad Program Spring 2016 ation Abroad — c u d Unive E rsity of Nor th Carolina Wilmington Program Overview April in Europe is a cutting-edge academic program that allows you to spend a semester completing courses that fulfill University Studies requirements while living in Europe for four weeks during the spring semester. Study popular culture, history, literature, and sociology in an international setting. All courses begin at UNCW, are taught by UNCW faculty, and are based on explorations beyond the classroom. We begin along the Rhine River in Bonn, Germany, and we travel to Cologne, Berlin, and Prague as part of the academic program. All program excursions are covered in your program costs. And there will be ample time for you to travel to other European destinations on your own. Academics Taught by UNCW professors: Dr. Paula Kamenish & Dr. Donna King ENG 290/GER 209/INT 340 - Franz Kafka’s Stories Get into the mind of this 20th-century genius by reading stories and traveling to Prague, the inspiration of Kafka’s fiction. HST 270/ENG 371 - Euro Lit and the Two World Wars Explore the European continent’s most passionate and articulate reactions to colonialism, war, holocaust, and terrorism through readings and excursions. SOC 105/SOC 294 - Introduction to Sociology: Euro Culture Develop a “sociological imagination” that links our individual selves to the larger social world. SOC 304 - Popular Culture: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Critique popular representations of race, class, gender, and sexuality and explore the role of corporations in the commercialization of culture. Program Activities and Features Bonn • Museum Mile, Castles, Rheinaue Park, and Boat Trip on the Rhine River • World headquarters of DW, Germany’s international media broadcasting service Cologne • House of the History of the Federal Republic of Germany • National Socialism Documentation Center in a former Gestapo headquarters • Gothic cathedral with Roman mosaic of Dionysus • Museum Ludwig (one of the largest collections of Picasso’s work) Berlin and Prague (5-day excursion) • German Historical Museum, Jewish Museum in Berlin, and Sachsenhausen • Concentration Camp • Museum of Communism, Hradcany Castle, and Jewish Museum in Prague Location We will live in Bonn for two weeks along the Rhine in western Germany, amid natural attractions including the Seven Mountain range, the Eifel region, and the Upper Middle Rhine valley with its many medieval castles and romantic towns. This area provides myriad opportunities for hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities. Our studies will then take us to the capital cities of Berlin and Prague. From there you will pursue your own research plans in Brussels, Paris, Amsterdam, Munich, Geneva, Venice, Warsaw, Vienna, Budapest, or wherever your academic interests lead you. Cost Estimated Program Fee: $3,700 Program Fee Includes: Accommodations for 22 nights with breakfast, class excursions each week, train travel to Berlin and Prague, entrance fees, two group dinners, and international health insurance. Additional Costs: (not included in program fee) Airfare from ILM or your home airport, additional meals, textbooks (many materials will be online), and personal expenses. Program qualifies for DE (reduced) tuition rate. Financial Aid & Scholarships Federal and state financial aid may be applied toward this program. Even if you are normally ineligible for financial aid, you should submit a financial aid application (FAFSA). You may find that you are eligible for additional funding. UNCW students may also apply for a UNCW Education Abroad Grant and additional study abroad scholarships.
