Requirements for the Bachelor of Social Work Degree Onslow Extension Site Transfer Students Admissions: Students must apply to both UNCW and the BSW Program. This is a two-step process. First, Students need to apply to UNCW through http://uncw.edu/admissions/apply.html. After being accepted to UNCW, students will then be contacted via UNCW e-mail to attend a BSW Information Session in Jacksonville. The purpose of this information session is to introduce students to the BSW application process. Two information sessions will be held: the first will be held in late April, the second in late July. At this information session, students learn where to find the application document, how to complete it properly, and they will be provided with a submission deadline. Students will be informed of their admission status prior to beginning their fall semester. For questions regarding General Admissions to the University please contact Karla Blanton, Admissions and Financial Aid Coordinator for the Extension Site at: blantonk@uncw.edu or (910) 346-8246. Collateral Courses: All students should complete the five collateral courses (13 hours) with a grade of C or better before entering their fall semester. If the majority of these classes are not completed prior to the first fall semester in the BSW program, it is recommended that the student complete these courses first, and apply for the following school year. Coastal CCC Equivalent Course SOC 210: Introduction to Sociology PSY 150: General Psychology POL 120: American Government BIO 110: Principles of Biology SWK 110: Intro to Social Work UNCW Course SOC 105: Introduction to Sociology PSY 105: General Psychology PLS: 101: American National Government BIO 105: Concepts of Modern Biology SWK 235: Introduction to Social Work and the Social Welfare System University Studies Requirements: All students are required to complete the University Studies Requirements in order to earn a Bachelor’s degree from UNCW. Students who plan to transfer to UNCW from a North Carolina Community College are encouraged to complete an Associate of Arts degree to assist in completion of these requirements. Though many UNCW requirements are waived once you have earned an AA degree, completion of the AA degree does not guarantee that students will not have to take additional courses outside of their major to complete a Bachelor’s Degree at UNCW. For more information on the North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement please refer to http://www.uncw.edu/reg/transfercredit-NCCCequivs.htm. The Foreign Language requirement is as follows: complete the language you previously studied through the 201 level OR complete a new language through the 102 level. For example, if you took Spanish in high school, and you continue to take Spanish in college, you must complete Spanish through the 201 level (which typically includes 101, 102, or 120, and 201). If Spanish was your high school foreign language, and you would like to try French instead, you will need to take French 101 and 102. This is a requirement for all UNCW students regardless of major. Minimum GPA: Students must attain a 2.5 GPA or better to be admitted to the BSW program. In addition, students must earn a C or better in all Social Work courses designated as SWK. If a student earns a C- or below in a SWK course, they must re-take the course, and are able to repeat the course ONCE for credit. Failure to earn a C or better in any social work course will cause the student to wait until the following school year to re-take the class (all core courses are only taught one semester per school year). Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better to be eligible to participate in the field placement (SWK 496 and SWK 497) which takes place in the senior year. Transfer Credits: UNCW’s policy on transfer credit may be found at http://www.uncw.edu/reg/transfercredit.htm. In order to determine transfer credit equivalents students may go to http://appserv02.uncw.edu/dasapps/transfer_articulation/ and http://appserv02.uncw.edu/reverse_transfer_articulation/. A transfer credit FAQ may be found at http://www.uncw.edu/reg/transfercredit-FAQs.htm. Scheduling: The BSW program is designed to be a full-time, daytime, face-to-face program. This means that the majority of core social work courses are offered between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday through Thursday. There are a few courses that are offered as hybrid online, or entirely online classes, but most core social work classes are taught in person at the Onslow Extension Site, on the campus of Coastal Carolina Community College.
