Release Time Stipend

Guidelines for Applicants

Deadline to Apply: May 1

Early in 1987, the University of Saskatchewan received a generous bequest from the late Dr. John Ranton

McIntosh to be used for furthering the work of the College of Education. Awards and benefits will be appropriately publicized each year in memory of Dr. McIntosh and to further the work of the College.

The John Ranton McIntosh Release Time Stipend (RTS) provides faculty with time to work on a research project or to develop a large-scale (either a Partnership Development Grant or Partnership Grant) tri-agency grant application by releasing them from one 3 credit-unit course.

Amount of award: up to $7200

Number of awards: up to 3 per year

Eligibility

All College of Education faculty members who are (or will be) the Principal Investigator on the research project.

Preference will be given to applicants who(se) o have not received a Release Time Stipend within the previous five years, o do not already have a course release for research, o are working on projects that already have external funding, o work aligns with the priorities and signature areas of research of the College, and or/ o have not just finished or will be on sabbatical or administrative leave in the following year.

Application and Deadlines

The application deadline is May 1 (Note: when the competition deadline falls on a weekend, the applications will be due on the next working day.). Notification of the award will be provided within 4–6 weeks of the competition deadline. The term of the award is 1 year.

Submit your application including 1) one original signed and completed Release Time Stipend application (hard copy), 2) a PDF electronic copy, and 3) an up-to-date CV to the Associate Dean Research ( edadr@usask.ca

) prior to the competition deadline.

Conditions of Award

The award is not renewable. Successful recipients are required to provide tangible evidence of their work in the form of a final report. (Note: The template for the final report can be found after the application form.)

Award Process

Processing of the award will occur as follows:

The Department Head will be notified of the award recipient and will then review the faculty member’s course load to determine which course they will be released from for the term.

The Department Head and the successful recipient will then work together to identify an eligible student to teach the course and therefore be awarded the Graduate Teaching Student Assistantship.

The department will arrange for the hire and be reimbursed for expenses up to $7,200. The Graduate

Teaching Student Assistantship will be paid out as employment since the terms of the agreement require the student to render service in return for the payment.

Graduate Student Eligibility: In order to be eligible to receive the Graduate Teaching Student Assistantship, the identified graduate student must meet the following conditions:

The student will be required to teach a course as determined by the Department Head of the successful recipient.

The receipt of the Graduate Teaching Student Assistantship is contingent upon the student’s registration in the College of Graduate Studies and Research as a fully qualified, full time student. Full time students are required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week on their graduate program.

The Graduate Teaching Student Assistantship is conditional on satisfactory academic and research performance.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications for Release Time Stipend are assessed based on the following criteria:

 the relevance to the College IP3 plan and UofS strategic research directions,

 the plan for how the time will be used,

 the need for the release (how many students have you been assigned to teach, the courses you have been assigned to teach that year, the number of research grants you hold, the type of research grants), and

 the impact (potential funder, the type of grant) of the project you propose.

Note: See Adjudication Rubric below (after the Final Report Template).

Eligible and Ineligible Expenses

The only eligible expense is the awarded Graduate Teaching Student Assistantship salary.
