About the Institute
The Institute of Brand and Innovation Law (IBIL), at UCL’s Law Faculty, was established
to reflect UCL’s strategy of expanding its activity in the field of intellectual property
law. IBIL is headed by Professor Sir Hugh Laddie QC, Chair of IP, formerly judge at the
High Court. His breadth of experience and knowledge not only of IP law but also of
the IP community in Europe, Asia and the US, make him an invaluable asset not only
for the Institute but also for UCL as a whole.
IBIL is driven by a strong desire to build bridges between academics, practitioners,
industry, the judiciary, policy makers and the student community worldwide. IBIL aims
to facilitate opportunities for dialogue through hosting events which combine critical
analysis with practical relevance and through producing research of the highest standards of scholarly rigour and real-world significance.
IBIL is proud to be part of a multi-faculty university with a global reputation for excellence. It is keen to establish links with other departments, including those of life
sciences and engineering, and institutes across UCL in order to share interests, foster
synergies and contribute to common objectives.

in 1974, where he became a bencher in 1993. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 1987.
He was a Recorder from 1990 to 1996, when he was appointed a High Court Judge in
the Chancery Division. In 2001, he was made Supervisory Chancery Judge of Midland,
Wales and Chester, and of the Western Circuits, a post he held until 2004, when he was
promoted to become a Lord Justice of Appeal and became a member of the Privy Council.
Since 1997, he has been Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Spoliation of Art during
the Holocaust.
Geoffrey Hobbs QC was called to the Bar in 1977, and is a practising barrister

worked for the IPO’s Policy Directorate on EU aspects of a range of intellectual property
policy issues, including database rights, registered designs, software patents, the London
Agreement on patent translations, the Lisbon Treaty, and European Court of Justice cases.
He has been involved with the current push for a European patent court and Community patent since the Commission’s patent strategy consultation in 2006, and is a regular
member of the UK delegation to the EU Council working groups which meet to discuss
the proposals currently on the table.
The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Jacob is in charge of the Court of Appeal intellectual property

his practice took him abroad often (Hong Kong, Singapore, Europe, USA, Australia). His
practice at the Bar involved working with experts in many fields – scientists or engineers
concerned with the technology of a particular patent case, accountants concerned with
valuation of patents and so on. He was appointed to the Bench in 1993. From 1997 to
2001 he was Supervising Chancery Judge for Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff. He was
