Staff Sir Hugh Laddie QC, Director, is Professor of Intellectual Property Law at UCL Laws. He practised at the Bar for 25 year, the last 10 as a Queens Counsel, in the area of Intellectual Property Law and was Standing Counsel to the Crown in this area while a junior. He appeared as counsel in leading IP cases in the High Court, the Court of Appeal, House of Lords, Privy Council and the European Court of Justice. He was appointed to the High Court Bench in 1995 and was assigned to the Chancery Division. He was one of the judges of the Patents Court, latterly being the senior judge. He resigned from the Bench in 2005. He continues to practice in a specialist IP law firm. He is co-author of The Modern Law of Copyright & Designs. Veronica Barresi, Co-Director, is Research Fellow in Intellectual Property Law at UCL Laws. Veronica completed an LLM in European Law at UCL and then practiced in Intellectual Property group at White & Case LLP, in Rome and London. Her practice mainly focused on the protection and enforcement of trade marks, designs and copyright. She has dual qualification in both England and Wales and Italy. Veronica’s main research interest lies in the area of trade mark law with a particular focus on the process of European harmonization of trade mark law. launch - 3rd june 2008 Ilanah Simon Fhima, Co-Director, joined UCL in September 2007 as a lecturer. Ilanah completed her PhD as a Herchel Smith Research Scholar at the Intellectual Property Research Institute of Queen Mary University of London, and held a position at Brunel University before coming to UCL. Ilanah is deputy editor of the European Trade Mark Reports and serves on the editorial board of the European Intellectual Property Review. She is also co-founder and a contributor to the IPKat intellectual property weblog (www.ipkat.com). Her research focuses trade mark law. She is particularly interested in infringement issues and the influence of European law on intellectual property law. She has particular research experience in comparative trade mark law (especially with relation to the United States) and trade mark dilution, the subject of her doctoral thesis. Ioannis Lianos is the City Solicitors’ Educational Trust Lecturer in European Union Law at UCL Laws, the Associate Executive Director of the Jevons Institute of Competition Law and Economics, and co-Director of the Centre for Law & Governance in Europe. He is a qualified advocate at the Paris and the Athens Bar. He is a visiting professor in competition and intellectual property law at the Centre for International Industrial Property Studies (CEIPI), University of Strasbourg. He is also a member of the Institute of Competition Law, Paris and the chairman of the eCompetition Bulletin editorial board (www.concurrences.com). Ioannis has worked at the European Court of Justice (Chambers of Advocate General G. Cosmas) and the United States Federal Trade Commission (New York office). His research interest lies in international and comparative (EU, UK, French, US) competition law, the competition law and intellectual property intersection, European Union law, comparative administrative and regulatory law, law and economics. Daniel Alexander QC is a Visiting Professor at UCL and a barrister at 8 New Square Chambers. His practice area covers litigation of intellectual property cases, including IT and media/entertainment cases, competition, EC, commercial and administrative law. He also has experience of international and EC cases include multi-jurisdictional IP issues, private international law, and the international arbitration of IP and media disputes. Christopher Stothers is a Visiting Lecturer at UCL. He previously taught at both Oxford and Cambridge. His rise to the Court of Appeal and then to the House of Lords is one of the quickest in recent times. Lord Neuberger was called to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn in 1974, where he became a bencher in 1993. He became a Queen’s Counsel in 1987. He was a Recorder from 1990 to 1996, when he was appointed a High Court Judge in the Chancery Division. In 2001, he was made Supervisory Chancery Judge of Midland, Wales and Chester, and of the Western Circuits, a post he held until 2004, when he was promoted to become a Lord Justice of Appeal and became a member of the Privy Council. Since 1997, he has been Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Spoliation of Art during the Holocaust. Geoffrey Hobbs QC was called to the Bar in 1977, and is a practising barrister at One Essex Court Chambers. He was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1991. He specialises in litigation and advisory work in the area of intellectual property and related aspects of competition law. He sits (since 1996) as ‘Appointed Person’ to hear and determine appeals from the Registrar of Trade Marks under section 76 of the Trade Marks Act 1994. Geoffrey has been authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court Judge since March 2001. Robin Stout, Head of EU Policy, the UK Intellectual Property Office, advising the government on EU aspects of intellectual property policy. He joined the UK Intellectual Property Office in 2001, as a patent examiner, after reading Physics at the University of Nottingham, specialising in computer-implemented inventions. For the last three years he has worked for the IPO’s Policy Directorate on EU aspects of a range of intellectual property policy issues, including database rights, registered designs, software patents, the London Agreement on patent translations, the Lisbon Treaty, and European Court of Justice cases. He has been involved with the current push for a European patent court and Community patent since the Commission’s patent strategy consultation in 2006, and is a regular member of the UK delegation to the EU Council working groups which meet to discuss the proposals currently on the table. The Rt. Hon. Lord Justice Jacob is in charge of the Court of Appeal intellectual property list and sits on most appeals in IP cases and nearly all patent cases. He is a Judicial Visitor at UCL Laws. After reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge, Sir Robin then read for the Bar and an LLB from the LSE. He practiced at the Intellectual Property Bar from 1967. From 1976 to 1981 he was the Junior Counsel for the Comptroller of Patents and for Government departments in intellectual property. He was made a Queen’s Counsel in 1981 and launch - 3rd june 2008 his practice took him abroad often (Hong Kong, Singapore, Europe, USA, Australia). His practice at the Bar involved working with experts in many fields – scientists or engineers concerned with the technology of a particular patent case, accountants concerned with valuation of patents and so on. He was appointed to the Bench in 1993. From 1997 to 2001 he was Supervising Chancery Judge for Birmingham, Bristol and Cardiff. He was appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in October 2003. He was Treasurer of Gray’s Inn in 2007. He has written extensively on all forms of intellectual property. He is President of the Intellectual Property Institute, Hon President of the UK branch of the Licensing Executive Society, and Hon President of the Association of Law Teachers. Dr Tilman Lüder is Head of Copyright and Knowledge-based Economy Unit, DG Internal Market at the European Commission. In 2005 Tilman coordinated the recommendation on collective management of online rights in musical works (10/2005, OJ L 276, 21/10/2005) and the evaluation report on the 1996 ‘Database Directive’ (12/2005); in 2006 he coordinated an impact study on the administration of private copying levies in Europe. In November 2007, the unit presented the first evaluation of the 2001 EU directive on ‘Copyright in the Information Society’. From 2002, Tilman was the Commission’s Competition Policy Spokesman working on a communication strategy for the Commission’s antitrust and state aid policies for Commissioner Mario Monti. From 1999 he was a case officer in the Commission’s Competition department. He was an associate at the Brussels office of Cleary Gottlieb Steen and Hamilton for number of years dealing with cases under the EC Merger Regulation, national merger control and Article 82 EC (abuse of a dominant position).
