MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - PAGE 1 OF 3 For more information contact RANDY PEEBLES - (910) 251-9600 Wilmington Kiwanis Club Celebrates Milestone/ Awards Four Chadwick Scholarships with overall value of $12,100 The Wilmington Kiwanis Club celebrated a milestone on May 7th where the club has been funding scholarships to UNCW for 50 years. The event hosted by UNCW. The Club started funding scholarships in 1964 and has been doing same for every year since. The Club estimates that it has expended over $ 194,000 in scholarship funding over the fifty years and has impacted over 80 students from NHC schools. Wilmington Kiwanis Club has awarded their 2014 George H. Chadwick, Jr. Memorial Scholarships to four students, two from Hoggard, one from New Hanover, and one from Wilmington Early College. These four scholarships have an overall value of $12,100. Normally, each year, the Club awards two scholarships to two deserving students from the seven New Hanover County high schools and who will be attending the UNCW. This year, one of our scholarship recipients dropped out after five semesters, therefore, allowing funding for a third and fourth runner-up scholarships. The 2014 George H. Chadwick, Jr. Memorial Full Scholarship is awarded to Miranda Thomas of Hoggard High School. Ms. Thomas’ scholarship is for $2,200 per year for four-year for total value of $8,800. Ms. Thomas is a member of the National Honor Society, and the Beta Club, . She graduates with 4.15 GPA (weighted). She is a member of the Hoggard honors orchestra and varsity lacrosse team for four years. Ms. Thomas worked her junior and senior years. Ms. Thomas wants to major somewhere in the psychology field. One runner-up scholarships is $1,100 for one year is awarded to Zana Al-Khateeb from Hoggard High School. Ms. Al-Khateeb is a member of the National Honors Society, HOSA, and the Beta Club, She has volunteered at the New Hanover Hospital for two years. She has completed the Certified Nursing Assistant program to be CNA.. She graduates with 3.67 GPA (weighted). Ms. Al-Khateeb plans to major in nursing with hopes to become a Nurse Practitioner. Another runner-up scholarship of $1,100 for one year is awarded to Madison Cubbage from New Hanover High School. She graduates with 4.17GPA (weighted). She is a member of the New Hanover marching band, concert band, and steel drum band, and the French Club. She is passionate about her flute. He graduates with 4.1 GPA (weighted) and in the top 10% of his class. Being a Early College HS graduate, Mr. Congema already has an two-year associate degree from Cape Fear Community College. As a student at WECHS, Mr. Congema was in Future Business Leaders of America club for four years. He has been on the CFCC President’s List and has been inducted to the WECHS National Honor Society. Mr. Congema will start at UNCW as a junior with hopes to major in Business Administration with a concentration in economics with two years. He would like to possibly own his business one day. Wilmington Kiwanis Club, organized and chartered in 1920, is a service organization focused on helping the needs of the youth in our community. The Club celebrated its ninetieth (90th) anniversary in March 2010. Through fund raising efforts like the Annual Pancake Day, the Wilmington Kiwanis Club contributes over $25,000 per year to organizations that support our youth. Since 1964 (50 yrs), the Club has been awarding scholarships to NHCo. high school seniors to attend UNCW. Applications for this scholarship are distributed by the counselors in each high school. The scholarship committee initially reviews submitted applications with input from the counselors, then selects six applicants to interview. The committee always ends their selection process wishing they had more funds to award to such quality students. The George H. Chadwick, Jr. Memorial Scholarships are named after George H. Chadwick, Jr. who was a native of Wilmington. Mr. Chadwick graduated in the Class of 1938 from New Hanover High School and attended Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tenn. for one year before joining the Army Air Force. During World War II, he served as a pilot in the Air Force with rank of captain. He flew more than 50 missions over Europe. Upon his return to civilian life in Wilmington, Mr. Chadwick became a very active member in our community serving as chairman of several prominent Boards. He served as the Club President in 1967. Mr. Chadwick is remembered as being very friendly and always greeted you with a smile. He loved young people and wanted to do whatever was possible to help students receive their education. He realized and understood the importance of education and never wanted finances to keep a young man or woman from getting a college degree. In 1978, when Mr. Chadwick died at the early age of 57 after an extended illness, he was serving as chairman of the Club’s scholarship committee.
