About University College London

University College London was founded in 1826. UCL is currently organized into ten constituent faculties, within which there are over 100 departments, institutes and research centres. UCL has over 4,000 academic and research staff and 648 professors, the highest number of any British university.

More than 40% of the 24,000-strong student community is engaged in graduate studies, with over a third of these graduate students pursuing research degrees. Students from almost 150 countries outside the

UK study at UCL, making up more than a third of the student body.

New UCL MAs in China –

Health and Humanity enroll first students in 2012:

Study at UCL, London, ranked seventh in the world’s top universities

(and 4th in Europe) with the highest number of professors in the UK and 11 associated teaching hospitals (QS World University Rankings,

2011). A new interdisciplinary MA aimed at training the next generation of health professionals in a broad range of skills.

“The program will bring great benefit to students who want to understand the issues of health and disease in Chinese traditional culture and global perspectives,” says

Professor Zhang Daqing, Director, Centre for History of

Medicine, Peking University

UCL’s new MA programmes in China: Health and Humanity bring together the latest multi-disciplinary approaches to research on health, culture and humanity as it relates to China. The programmes offer the skills necessary to enter or progress your career in a rapidly expanding field, whether you are a native speaker, have studied the Chinese language or are a non-Chinese speaker.

The core programme will offer valuable perspectives from multiple fields including history of medicine, anthropology, social sciences, law, built environment, climate change, media, sports science and global health governance.

1 Year MA:

Career options:

Intended for graduates of Chinese Studies programmes and native

Chinese speakers, the programme will train the next generation of professionals in the skills necessary for understanding and further improving conditions in China. The programme will offer intensive training in academic English and translation for publication online and in European journals.

2 Year MA:

Intended for non-Chinese speakers, the programme will provide a foundation in the language, history and culture of China, with specialist courses in different aspects of China’s health and her impact around the world. Language will be taught at beginner, intermediate and advanced level. Options will also include a summer programme in language and/or health studies in China. Apart from the compulsory courses a wide range of options are available for students to design their own programme (for more information about course structure and options visit www.ucl.ac.uk/chinahealth ).

Graduates from the MA will be well prepared to take advantage of job opportunities that are also available to graduates from IGH, and

Anthropology, but with the added advantage of an expertise in China: health administration policy and consultancy, health law, in bilateral and multilateral organisations, NGOs, built and natural environment, climate change, health research in China and the UK. The programme also aims to create a new expertise in China’s health culture that will open up job opportunities as China begins on a rapid programme of developing public private health-care partnerships. Chinese MA and

PhD students graduating simultaneously with a UK MA and a Chinese

PhD with advanced English will be particularly attractive to Chinese and Chinese/European joint enterprises*.

* The latter is aimed at Chinese PhD students that might like to do the MA during the course of their Chinese PhD research.
