Objectives With the democratization of tertiary education, graduates in Tamil need to have further academic competence in view to meeting new challenges in the field of Tamil Studies. Students will be provided opportunities to acquire deeper insight into Tamil language, literature and culture, besides developing creative skills in the language. 2. Continuous Assessment will be based on seminars/presentations/ assignments/class tests. There is no level attached to modules, i.e. each module carries its credit value. • • 8. For a student to pass a module, an overall total of 40 % for combined Continuous Assessment (CA) and Written Examination (WE) components would be required, without minimum thresholds within the individual Continuous Assessment and Written Examination components. The same criterian will apply for modules being assessed jointly. Outline Syllabus TMA 5101 - MODERN LITERATURE This module aims at providing students with an in-depth knowledge of contemporary poetry, prose and literature. Selections from the works of famous authors will be studied. The theme, trend and focus, in relation to existing and new literary theories, will receive full treatment. TMA 5102 – GRAMMAR I – TOLKAAPIYAM (EZHUTTU) This module aims at providing thorough knowledge of phonology and its application as laid down in Tolkaappiyam. Selections of grammatical verses from Ezhuttadikaaram will be studied. TMA 5103 – MEDIEVAL POETRY (BHAKTI & MINOR) This module will consist of two main parts, namely: Bakti literature and other literary works grouped under Minor literature. An in-depth study of Bakti literature in relation to the Bakti Movement that took place during the Medieval period in Tamil Nadu and changes such literature brought in the tradition will be studied. Selections from familiar minor literary works will be analysed critically. 3 TMA 5104 – GRAMMAR II – TOLKAAPIYAM (SOL) The aim of this module is to provide a thorough knowledge of morphology and syntax as laid down in Tolkaapiyam. Selections of verses from Soladikaaram will be studied. TMA 5201 - TAMIL LINGUISTICS This module will provide opportunities to study Tamil language from a syndronic and diachronic level. Linguistic concepts as laid down in Tolkaapiyam and Nannul will be compared with those existing in General Linguistics. Tamil phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics will be studied from a structural linguistic point of view. TMA 5202 – LITERARY THEORIES AND APPRECIATION This module aims at acquainting students with the various literary theories and their applications in some important literary works in Tamil. Students will have a better understanding of the creative process and thus be more equipped for critical appreciation of literature. TMA 5203 - GRAMMAR III – TOLKAAPIYAM (PORUL) This module will provide a complete study of Porul Ilakkanam dealing mainly with Akam and Puram as basic concepts and their application in literary texts. TMA 5204 – SANGAM LITERATURE This module aims at providing deeper knowledge of the Sangam classical literature. Selections from Ettuthokai and PatthuppaaTTu based on the concepts of Akam and Puram will be studied. TMA 5000 - DISSERTATION A dissertation equivalent to 12 credits of about 10,000 to 14,000 words. Lectures in research methodology will also be provided so that students are sufficiently equipped and feel confident to write their dissertations. Topics for dissertations to be finalised by the end of Semester II of first year. TMA 5105 – TRANSLATION STUDIES This module aims at providing a thorough knowledge of various theories and techniques of translation and their applications. It will help to develop required skills in translation. A detailed study of various forms of translation and selected translation works will form the basis for discussions. TMA 5106 – COMPARATIVE LITERATURE This module aims at responding to the need for the study of comparative literature in general. Theories, importance and relevance of comparative literature will be studied. A few works on comparative literature in Tamil will be considered for reference purposes. TMA 5107 – SPECIAL LITERATURE (EPIC) This module aims at providing an opportunity to students to study the Epic comprehensively Literature.
