Studying Abroad for English Majors The opportunity to study abroad is often a highlight of English majors’ college years, and at Winthrop we encourage as many as possible to take advantage of the chance to experience life in a foreign country. Whether the student selects the traditional option of a study abroad semester or finds short term study abroad of more interest, we can help him or her find the perfect experience. Though many private companies offer study abroad programs, the most economical way to spend a semester in a foreign country is through one of Winthrop’s partner schools. In this situation, Winthrop tuition is charged, and the student is additionally responsible for room and board fees at the partner institution, the airline ticket, a passport, a visa (if required), medical insurance, and spending money. Scholarships will transfer, and additional ones may be available at the chosen institution. A complete list of these universities can be found on the International Center’s web pages. Staff in the International Center are available to answer questions and to offer advice on programs of study, and staff in the Financial Aid office are ready to assist with financial concerns. In order to qualify for semester study abroad, a student must have sophomore standing, a 2.5 GPA, and a clean conduct record. Additionally, he or she must be enrolled as a full time student while overseas. Another option is a short term study abroad; these trips range from a few days to a few weeks. Usually, these travel experiences are associated with classes partially taught on campus with additional instructional hours in another country. The English Department offers several courses on a rotating basis that have been extremely popular with students and are open to anyone who has successfully exited Writing 101. Interesting courses that include travel are taught in other disciplines as well and, like the ones in English, are open to all majors. Specific requirements for those may vary. Often a student participates in a short term experience and enjoys it so much that he or she opts to pursue long term study abroad afterward. As exciting as the idea of study abroad is, the reality is that some serious planning is required. With semester-long programs, careful scheduling is essential to ensure that all requirements in the major are met. This goal is challenging, but doable with good planning. The charts that follow show a four-year plan for each track in the English major with a semester at either Edge Hill University in England or Deakin University as part of the sample plan. Others universities may be chosen instead of the two mentioned, and the course sequencing can, in some cases, be adjusted. However, these charts were created to show one path toward the goal of a semester of foreign study for each track in the English major.
