Please explain/justify the new proposal or change. 
Changing the name of the Institute to Center for Natural Resource and Environmental Policy better
reflects our teaching, research, and outreach activities, and raises the visibility of UM as a center of
excellence in natural resource and environmental policy. The proposed name change is consistent
with the historic focus and purpose of the Institute – to address the social, economic, and
environmental impacts associated with development. The word “center” better describes our work
than “institute,” and thus we propose to change that part of the name as well. According to Policy
#103, a “center” includes “a broad portfolio that includes promoting instruction, community
service, and research and/or creative activity,” while an “institute” includes “a variety of
independent but related educational, research, and/or creative projects.” For more information on
