General Education Committee Minutes, 4/25/12 Members present: S. Caro, J. DeBoer, J. Luckowski, J. Rabinovitch, D. Sloan, A. Sillars, E. Uchimoto, N. White Members Absent: E. Adams, D. Klapmeier, Ex-Officio Members Present: E. Johnson Guest: S. Bradford, Dean McCusick The minutes from 4/11/12 were approved. Business Items: The Expressive Arts review was routine. Learning goal follow-up was requested and received for one course. All courses submitted were recommended for approval. It appears that a few of the courses submitted from Music are for new designations. [Camie checked with the department – the old Chamber Ensembles course (MUS 150A) was separated into several courses during common course numbering.] The grace period caused some confusion with regard to ANTY 220, Culture and Society. It currently has a Social Science and Indigenous and Global Status and applied for Ethics status. The course was approved for Ethics status and the instructor agreed to withdraw the renewal for Social Science. The course was advertised in the Kiamin as fulfilling the ethics requirement this fall, but according to ASCRC policy would not be set up with the designation until fall 2013. There are currently 90 students registered. The grace period for the social science group would continue until fall 2013 as well. The committee previously indicated it wanted to consider language to limit double dipping to two groups. This course also fulfills indigenous and global studies. In this case the committee voted to hold the student harmless and request that an exception be made to policy to grant the ethics designation this fall. Otherwise, 90 students may be guided to graduation appeals. The Committee unanimously approved the following motion with regard to out-of-state transfer students. Students transferring from outside the Montana University System should have comparable paths to completing general education requirements as students within the Montana University System. Enrollment Services was informed of the Committees interest in the issue. Apparently the Commissioner’s Office is also considering this issue. The Committee briefly considered ASCRC’s recommendation to consider incentives for students to take foreign language. Modern and Classical Languages will need to consider which general education groups second year language courses would satisfy. The item will be tabled until next year. Professors Uchimoto and White agreed to serve as co-chairs next year. They will work on sample forms over the summer. Chair DeBoer will work on the annual report. The meeting was adjourned at 5: 00 PM.
