Graduate Council Meeting Minutes March 12, 2008 GBB 202, 12:10-1:00 p.m. Members Present: L. Ametsbichler, M. Antonioli, J. Copeland M. DeGrandpre, D. Erickson, C. Fiore, T. Herron, J. McNulty, D. Potts, C. VonReichert, C. Winkler Members Absent/Excused: W. Madison, N. Hinman Ex-officio members Present: Dean Strobel Chair Erickson called the meeting to order at 12:10 p.m. The 3/5/08 minutes were approved. Communication: Bertha Mortons The Council thanked Dean Strobel for posting the Bertha Morton Nominations. Not all Council members’ scores were submitted, so the initial breakdown was not available. Members were instructed to have their scores to Dean Strobel by Saturday, March 15th. There are approximately 30 scholarships including one fellowship available. It was suggested that the top 40% of each group receive the award. The next 20% will be reviewed by two generalists (approximately 2 nominations each- assigned by either Dean Strobel or Camie). These nominations will be discussed by the Council if there is not a natural break for the additional awards. Humanities Schools Science Social Sciences Total 8 (late proposals from Media Arts pending) 21 20 9 58 The Faculty Library Committee The Faculty Library Committee drafted a resolution that includes adding an exofficio member from the library to ASCRC and Graduate Council. The Library would like to be involved in the review of new programs that affect library acquisitions. The committee discussed the recommendation and does not support the addition of an ex-officio member. It seems that the library’s main concern is about resources and this is not the purview of the Council. A representative from the Library would be welcome to attend the Council meetings when level II proposals are discussed, but does not agree that an ex-officio member is necessary. Business Items: Data Analysis Workgroup Update The electronic student survey went out on Tuesday. Professor Fiore heard from students that were experiencing delays. She recommended that they try again latter. So it appears that a lot of students are responding. The graduate director survey will also be conducted electronically. Next week the directors will receive the communication with the attached survey to print, so that they can refer to the paper copy prior to entering their electronic responses. The workgroup will have the final analysis of the second cohort next week. It will not be able to send data to departments for input due to time constraints. A meeting will be set up with the Provost after spring break. New Admissions Criteria Review The Council discussed the revised Drama/Dance proposal. It recommends that high level work experience be better defined. The draft will be sent back to the department for additional refinement. Criteria for Allocating Teaching Assistantships The Council reviewed the document. The guidelines are hypothetical in case a reallocation takes place. There is concern that the data used to measure productivity will come from a report that is prepared by the Research Office. Data is not currently collected on publications or other measures such as national reputation. The Council may wish to suggest that other data be collected to make informed decisions. The results of the Data Analysis Workgroup may provide insight into these needs. One criterion missing from the document is consideration for economic development in the state. The meeting was adjourned at 1:00 p.m.
