COSMETOLOGY COSMETOLOGY Careers in personal beauty celebrate creativity, flexibility, passion and a desire to help others. Cosmetologists provide a full range of beauty services including coloring, cutting and styling hair, as well as nail care, skin care, makeup and advice. They also must know the rules and regulations that govern their industry, the sanitation and safety requirements, and chemical formulations. There is a diverse range of opportunity in this ever-evolving and exciting field, including entrepreneurship, salon owner, make-up artist, and distribution and sales for major cosmetic and salon chains. The Cosmetology program at College of DuPage provides professionallevel skills in the field of personal beauty. Students gain knowledge and skills in a broad range of disciplines including aesthetics, business, chemical processes, hair design, nail technology, safety, salon operations and sanitation. Those who successfully complete this program will be awarded a certificate from College of DuPage as well as transcripts needed to test with the State of Illinois. ABOUT THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM The Cosmetology program is offered in two formats: The full-time format is a fast-paced, three-semester program. Courses in the first semester are offered Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. During the second semester, students attend Tuesday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Students will complete the program the third semester in a shortened schedule to prepare for the state licensing exam. The part-time program is over five semesters. Students attend Monday to Thursday from 5 to approximately 9:50 p.m. Students will complete the program the fifth semester in a shortened schedule to prepare for the state licensing exam. ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE (A.A.S.) IN COSMETOLOGY Students who successfully complete the Cosmetology A.A.S. program, which includes 50 credits of coursework as well as 18 credits in general education requirements, are eligible to receive an Associate of Applied Science degree in Cosmetology. Students who successfully complete the Cosmetology course requirements will receive the necessary transcripts needed to test with the State of Illinois. CERTIFICATE IN COSMETOLOGY Students who successfully complete the Cosmetology certificate program, which includes 50 credits of coursework, are eligible to receive a Cosmetology certificate from College of DuPage. Students who successfully complete the Cosmetology course requirements will receive the necessary transcripts needed to test with the State of Illinois. COSMETOLOGY SALON Students who have completed 1000-level classes will begin working in the Cosmetology Salon to apply their skills. The salon at College of DuPage offers a full range of salon services to members of the community at a fraction of the cost of professional salons. Under the supervision of licensed instructors, students perform beauty services, such as cuts, styling, color, manicures, pedicures, facial waxing and more. Salon services are offered Tuesday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Thursday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. TRANSFER OPPORTUNITIES The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) facilitates the transfer of students from one Illinois institution to another. Both a general education core curriculum and a lower-division major recommendation course listing have been developed. COMMON CAREERS FOR GRADUATES OF THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM •Cosmetologists/Hair Stylists: Provide beauty services such as shampooing, cutting, coloring and styling hair, and massaging and treating the scalp. May apply makeup, dress wigs, perform hair removal and provide nail and skin cares services. •Make-up Artists: Apply make-up to performers to reflect the period, setting and situation of their role. •Manicurists/Pedicurists: Clean, shape, color and beautify fingernails and toenails. •Skin Care Specialists: Cleanse and beautify the face and body. Give facials, full-body treatments and head and neck massages to improve health and appearance of the skin. May also provide treatments such as peels, masks or scrubs. EMPLOYMENT OUTLOOK The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the average yearly wage for cosmetologists was $23,000 in 2012, with top earners bringing in more than $42,360. That same year, the average annual wage for skin care specialists was $31,720, with top earners bringing in more than $51,900, and the average annual wage for theatrical and performance make-up artists was $67,580, with top earners bringing in over $117,720. Employment of cosmetologists and hair stylists is expected to grow by 13 percent from 2012 to 2022. Overall, job opportunities in personal beauty-related occupations should be very good. The growing number of salons and the need to replace workers who retire or transfer to other occupations will result in many job openings. In addition, an increasingly aging population will lead to an increasing number of individuals seeking to offset the effects of aging.
