Title: Assistant Vice President for Sponsored Programs & Research (SPAR)
Position Description: Directs all phases of operation of the Office of Sponsored Programs & Research
(SPAR), including internal operations, sponsored activity development, grants and contracts administration,
and research compliance. Assists faculty, staff, academic departments, colleges, and the University as a
whole in obtaining external support that funds research, projects and, other development activities. Defines
roles and responsibilities of staff to maximize effectiveness and ensure a high level of service to faculty and
staff.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in public administration, business, a research discipline, or other
appropriate field, with a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in grants and
contracts administration, at least three of which must be in a university environment, or doctoral or
professional degree with significant university sponsored programs experience.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Significant experience in a university research environment
with extensive knowledge of multiple sponsor grants and contract regulations, policies and procedures,
guidelines, pertinent laws, and program funding policies. Considerable knowledge of principles and
practices of public and business administration and government accounting and budgeting practices.
Superior negotiation and presentation skills. Demonstrated leadership ability in facilitating faculty and staff
participation in sponsored activities. Ability to analyze situations quickly and accurately and formulate
effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with administrators.
Position requires a high degree of independence, discretion, and professionalism in the performance of
many complex and critical functions in a fast-paced environment.
Employment Conditions: A twelve-month administrative position with faculty rank housed in Academic
Affairs. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.
