University
Spring 2016
Advisement and
Registration
There are two advisement/
registration opportunities for
students who will enroll in the
spring semester.
wStudents who are admitted by
November 13 can participate
in early advisement and
registration, which will be held
on November 30 - December 4.
Registration materials will be
mailed from the student services
office in each academic college.
NOTE: students cannot register
online for the early
advisement sessions.
w Students who are admitted
after November 13 or who are
unable to attend an early
advisement session will be
advised during spring
Orientation which will be held
on January 8, 2016.
Registration materials will be
mailed from the Office of New
Student and Family Programs
beginning in early December.
wFor additional information on
spring Orientation, refer to the
following website:
www.winthrop.edu/orientation
or you can call the Office of
New Student and Family
Programs at 803/323-2387.
Congratulations on your admission to Winthrop University!
We welcome post-traditional students and want to assist in your transition by
sharing important information on admissions, health and counseling
services and spring enrollment. Please contact your personal admissions counselor
if you would like to receive additional information or assistance.
Evaluation of Transfer Credit
The evaluation of transfer credit is conducted by the student services office in each
academic college upon acceptance. Preliminary information on your transfer credit
will be available on Wingspan, the student portal, after transfer coursework has been
entered by admissions staff. Final approval for transfer credit is granted by faculty
and staff in the colleges (see below.)
After logging into Wingspan at https://wingspan.winthrop.edu, click on the
STUDENT tab and then click on the STUDENT RECORDS menu for the Spring
2016 term. On the STUDENT RECORDS menu, select TRANSFER CREDIT.
Winthrop University is accredited by the commission on colleges of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s, master’s and specialist
degrees. Winthrop University does not automatically evaluate transfer credit
from an institution that is not accredited by the commission on colleges or higher
education of a regional accrediting agency.
If you have attended a college or university that does not have regional accreditation,
all of the courses taken at that college will be evaluated on an individual basis by staff
in the office of student services in the college under which your intended major resides.
If you are interested in a review of courses taken at a college or university that is not
regionally accredited, you can submit a request to the applicable office of student
services listed below. If an evaluation cannot be completed based upon the course
descriptions in the institution’s catalog, you will be asked to provide course syllabi.
Note: If admitted to fine arts or design programs, students will need to submit
a portfolio for studio courses taken at previous institution(s) before courses are
evaluated.

WELCOME, NEW WINTHROP EAGLE!
Now that you have been admitted to Winthrop, our admissions counselors have compiled a list of information that will
help you over the coming months. You are encouraged to contact your personal admissions counselor for additional
information on enrollment.
HELPFUL HINTS FOR NEW STUDENTS
Remember your Winthrop ID number. Your official Winthrop ID number has been provided in your letter
of admission. It will be used instead of your social security number to conduct official Winthrop business. The
Winthrop ID number will serve as your log-in and your date of birth will be your password to access your enrollment
checklist at www.winthrop.edu/mychecklist.
Programs and services for adult students, transfers and veterans are provided by staff in the Resource Center for Adult
Student Services in 108 Dinkins Hall. The telephone number is 803-323-4784. You are encouraged to use the
services provided by the center.
Next Steps:
rMonitor your enrollment checklist at www.winthrop.edu/mychecklist. Use this checklist to ensure that you have completed all of the actions needed to confirm your enrollment.
rStudents who live in South Carolina should review your residency status and submit the appropriate form if
requested. Your eligibility for a Winthrop scholarship nor the South Carolina HOPE or LIFE Scholarship (if applicable) cannot be reviewed if a decision on your residency status has not been rendered.
rSign-up for a Winthrop e-mail account as soon as possible. Your account will be used to view and accept financial aid and register for classes during one of our Transfer Advisement or Orientation sessions (see page 1). You can obtain a Winthrop e-mail account by logging on to www.winthrop.edu/mychecklist.
rRegister for and attend an advisement or orientation session. You will meet with an academic advisor and plan your schedule for your first semester. Advisement is required before you can register for classes.
rComplete and submit the Immunization Form to Health and Counseling Services. Complete information is provided on the enclosed information sheet.
rApply for and accept your financial aid (if applicable). Winthrop University’s FAFSA code is 003456. Information
from the Office of Financial Aid will be sent to you via e-mail. Note: Information on Winthrop and state scholarships will be sent to students after an official final transcript has been sent to the Office of Admissions. The deadline for awarding Winthrop merit scholarships is the Friday of the second week of classes for the semester.
rSend an official final transcript to the Office of Admissions immediately after your last term of attendance. If you withdraw for the final semester, an updated transcript showing your withdrawal should be sent to the Office of
Admissions to complete your file. A transcript request form can be printed from this web page:
www.winthrop.edu/admissions/welcometowu.
rNote South Carolina’s Legal Presence Requirement. The State of South Carolina requires that legal presence in the United States be verified for all students before enrollment in a public college or university. For most students, legal presence will be verified through a process that has been adopted by the University. Some students may be required to provide documentation to the registrar. Complete information can be viewed at www.winthrop.edu/recandreg/citizen.
