Cleve Carney Art Gallery Dedication
Hundreds of guests enjoyed the unveiling of the Cleve
Carney Art Gallery hosted by the College of DuPage
Foundation. Click here for more photos. Following the
formal gallery dedication, many of the guests were
entertained in a sold-out concert featuring Grammy
Award-winning jazz vocalist Kurt Elling, who is the
son-in-law of the late Cleve Carney. A DuPage
County native and Glen Ellyn resident, Carney was an
avid art collector who took an interest in new and
upcoming artists, embracing both the work and the
individuals behind their creations. In 2012, Carney
provided the COD Foundation with a gift consisting of
a $700,000 donation and a gift in kind of artwork that,
once appraised, will total approximately $1 million.
The funds are being used to establish the Cleve
Carney Art Gallery in the McAninch Arts Center and
the Cleve Carney Art Gallery Endowment Fund.
Karen Kuhn New AVP
for Development
Naperville resident Karen
Kuhn was recently
named Assistant Vice
President for Development at COD. In her new
role, Kuhn is working with
the College’s Foundation,
running the day-to-day
operations and
developing a major gifts
program. Kuhn, who has nearly 20 years of experience in
development, is especially enthusiastic about the high
growth potential in DuPage County. “This area provides so
much opportunity upon which we can capitalize in order to
benefit our students,” Kuhn said. “One reason I love a
community college setting is that people really want to be
here, but sometimes they need help. Having grown up in
Naperville, I am fully aware of the impact that College of
DuPage has on people’s lives.” Read More
EMT Certification Pass Rates Crush National Average
According to a report released by the National Registry of
Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT), College of
DuPage ranks far above the national average for passing
rates on the emergency medical technician certification
exam. College of DuPage students pass the exam on first
attempt at a rate of 89 percent, while the national average is
72 percent. Fire Science Manager Dan Krakora said the
success of the EMT program at COD is directly related to the
high quality of the instructors, as well as the College's choice
to train students at the NREMT level. "Other programs
throughout Illinois avoid the NREMT exam because they view
it as too difficult," Krakora said. "Though Illinois is one of only
five states that does not require national certification, we see
the NREMT exam as a tremendous opportunity for students.”

Kudos to…High School Admissions Representative
Sean Warren, whose outstanding service was noted in a
recent letter from a prospective student’s parent: “I wanted
to tell you that in September 2013 I reached out to Mr.
Sean Warren with some questions regarding COD and my
son attending. I cannot even begin to tell you what a
wonderful help he has been. My oldest is graduating from
Downers Grove South this year and will be attending COD
in the fall. Since he is my oldest and I am not from this area
I was totally clueless on what to do to start the process.
We have been emailing ever since and he even proactively
set an alert to let me know when the latest sessions for
Begin@COD would be scheduled. He has made this
transition go much smoother.”
More Kudos to…Marketing Director Laurie
Jorgensen, who received this comment on the new
College branding initiative from Jamie Merisotis,
CEO of the Lumina Foundation for Education: “Love
the video. Very smart move on COD’s part. Not only
do we think they’re basically right, but we fear that
schools that don’t get it—that don’t see that the world
is changing and that they can change, too, in ways
that make them even more relevant, and more useful
to our economy and our democracy—will have a
tough time in the very near future. Good for College
of DuPage!” Learn more about the COD branding
Initiative at www.cod.edu/brand.

education. The commission also examines topics of
interest to arts and science deans, including distance
learning, technology, schedule, curriculum, assessment
and honors programs.
More Kudos to…Katherine Thompson, Associate
Registrar, who presented on the topic of MOOC's at the
Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling
(IACAC) District Seminar at Lewis University on March 6.
In addition, Julie Marlatt, Coordinator of Admissions and

Glen Ellyn Police Officer Steve Miko (left) and State
Representative Sandy Pihos participated in a recent Glen
Ellyn Senior Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association
meeting at the Homeland Security Education Center.
Approximately 30 seniors (non-officers) from the Glen Ellyn
Senior Police Academy attended the event where they
learned about current crime updates and trends from the
Glen Ellyn Police. For many of the participants, it was their
first visit to the HEC and they enjoyed a tour of the facility at
the end of the training. Kudos to Tom Brady and Mike
Casey who hosted this event.
