April 26, 2013 Abigail Escatel Earns Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Speech Communications Professor Lauren Morgan congratulates student Abigail Escatel, recipient of the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, the largest private scholarship for two-year and community college transfer students. The Riverside resident is one of 73 students nationwide to receive the scholarship and the sixth COD recipient in the school’s history. Read More Cosmetology Program, Salon Great Value The Cosmetology program at College of DuPage trains students with the knowledge and skills required for a successful career in the beauty industry, offering a wide range of hands-on classes at a cost that is significantly less than forprofit schools. “At several private cosmetology schools, the tuition is close to $20,000 or more,” said Cosmetology Program Coordinator Beatrice Brown. “It's great to know that we're offering the same quality training, resulting in sought-after graduates, at a savings of nearly 25 percent.” The quality of the program at College of DuPage has not gone unnoticed, Brown said. A number of graduates work for high profile salons in the area, including Charles Ifergan, Mario Tricoci and Zano salons. These locations, impressed by the College of DuPage graduates they've hired, have contacted the College looking for additional stylists. The frantic cries of a mother whose 6year-old son fell from a two-story window in the HEC tactical village started the simulation between the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and Nursing program students. Click here for photos and a video from this event. The young patient was in fact a hightech pediatric simulator or mannequin that has advanced functions such as moaning, coughing, vomiting, pupil dilatations and seizure activity. The patient's blood pressure, respirations, heart rate and temperature can also be changed and controlled by the instructors in charge of the simulation. Kudos to…faculty and students in the Accounting program, who provided free assistance to College and community members in filing their electronic returns this spring. Students, under the supervision of faculty, processed 362 returns, up 72 percent from last year. According to instructor Mark Yahoudy, “We helped a number of people who just had questions. If you assume that the average fee charged by a paid preparer is probably around $200 for the types of returns we did, we saved 362 people a lot of money and we had a lot of fun. I did the math, and that is a savings of approximately $72,000!” More Kudos to…the team at WDCB 90.9fm, who wrapped up a very successful annual Earth Day Pledge Drive. The station more than QUADRUPLED last year’s total in excess of $32,000 from more than 300 listeners, with the promise to plant 325 trees with the National Forest Foundation. Additionally, the station recruited sponsors to fund the cost of the trees, so every dollar donated to WDCB was used for this important program.
