Relativity Speaking…
COD Speech Communication Associate Speech
Professor Chris Miller entertains a sold-out crowd at
this year’s Physics Slam at Fermilab. Miller emceed
the event, which featured five top physicists who
discussed (at a layman’s level) topics such as extra
dimensions, weird particle phenomena, new
experiments and accelerator technologies. Miller,
assistant director of the College’s Forensics Team and
host of COD’s “That Beepin’ Show,” added levity to
these dense and complex matters. ““I wanted to make
physics fun and accessible for the rest of us fools,”
Miller said. The Nov. 16 event was sold out for the
first time ever before Fermilab’s box office even
opened for the evening. Click here for more photos
and more information about the Physics Slam.

Study Abroad Program Receives National
Recognition for Number of Students Enrolled
The Institute for International Education ranks College of
DuPage second nationally for number of community college
students participating in study abroad programs. During the
2010-2011 academic year, COD enrolled 146 students in
international programs. Pellissippi State Technical
Community College in Tennessee is first with 174 students,
and Pasadena City College in California ranks third with 117.
Maren McKellin, coordinator of Field and Experiential
Learning and Study Abroad, said College of DuPage
embraces international education in all forms. “We’ve
offered many successful international offerings, including
our language immersion programs in Costa Rica, France,
Japan and Spain, as well as international educational
excursions to more than 70 countries,” she said. “These
programs provide our students with a world view that
benefits their future endeavors, no matter what career they
select.” McKellin said these programs attract both students
earning credits and community members who are interested
in travel with an educational component. Read More
Chaparrals Take on Norsemen in Citizens Bank Bowl
Two years after the team's win at the Graphic Edge Bowl,
the College of DuPage Chaparrals top off an impressive
8-2 season with a trip to the Citizens Bank Bowl Dec. 2 in
Pittsburg, Kan. The 15th-ranked Chaparral gridders face
off against the ninth-ranked Northeastern Oklahoma A&M
College Golden Norsemen in a 1 p.m. kickoff at Carnie
Smith Stadium on the Pittsburg State University campus.
The Citizens Bank Bowl, started in 2009, is sanctioned by
the National Junior College Athletic Association and served
as the NJCAA championship game for the 2009-2010 and
2010-2011 seasons. "The team's 15 wins over the last two
seasons is the best two-year stretch since 1995 and 1996
when the Chaparrals won 19 games," said Head Coach
Gary Thomas. Read More

Architecture Text Features COD
Student Drawings
The fourth edition of Rendow Yee’s
textbook “Architectural Drawing: A
Visual Compendium of Types and
Methods,” published this year, includes
COD student contributions. Included in
the textbook’s sections on “Drawing
Exercises” are renderings from students
Jesus Corral, Brian Henks, Andres
Lemus and Will Prescott. In addition,
Bojana Martinic and Damian
Rozkuszka are featured in sections
regarding portfolio work. Former COD
student Geunho Song also has three separate pieces featured in
the textbook. Jane Ostargaard, professor and coordinator of the
Architecture program, said work was selected as examples that
demonstrate a high skill level. “Having their work published is
something our students can now put on their resumes,” she said.
“It’s pretty amazing to see them listed alongside important architects
and students from prestigious four-year programs.” Read More
