INTERNATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES
Advanced Topics in Ecology
Travel to Africa to attempt an ascent on one of earth’s “Seven Summits,” 19,340-foot
Mt. Kilimanjaro. The hike to the roof of Africa requires no technical skills but the challenge,
which requires long days and exhausting ascents, is not to be taken lightly. We will attempt
our climb with a team of local porters and guides over seven days. Not only does this increase
the success rate in reaching the summit but it will also allow us ample time to enjoy the
spectacular scenery and better acclimate to the high altitude. After our time on the tallest
free-standing mountain in the world, celebrate by embarking on a four-day African safari to
Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Live among the rhinoceros,
lions, cheetahs and elephants of the African plains. Opportunities will also be available to
those that would like to give back to the local community. Instructor approval is required prior
to registration and participants must be comfortable hiking at high altitudes up to 10 miles
a day with a 15-pound backpack over well-maintained trails in various weather conditions.
Class: Dec. 7, 2016 (6 to 8:50 p.m.). Field study: Jan. 4 to 18, 2017. Fee: $7,986 (includes
air and ground transportation, hotel and camping fees, permits, group camping equipment,
