Kilimanjaro. The hike to the roof of Africa requires no technical skills but the challenge, which requires long days and exhausting ascents, is not to be taken lightly. We will attempt our climb with a team of local porters and guides over seven days. Not only does this increase the success rate in reaching the summit but it will also allow us ample time to enjoy the spectacular scenery and better acclimate to the high altitude. After our time on the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, celebrate by embarking on a four-day African safari to Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park. Climb out of Yosemite Valley, among massive waterfalls and the iconic Half Dome, past Cathedral Peak where Muir made a first ascent in 1869 to the high country of Tuolumne Meadows. From here, cross 11,000-foot Donahue Pass into the Ansel Adams Wilderness where we will travel among photogenic alpine lakes through Muir’s “Range of Light.” Finish the trek at the geologically significant Devils Postpile National Monument. Prior backpacking experience and consent of instructor are mandatory. Students must be comfortable backpacking up to 12 miles a day at altitudes up to 11,000 feet while carrying a 40-pound backpack.
