RECAP
Western/Northern Meeting &Training Session
Cow Head, June 10-11, 2010
Professional
Municipal
Administrators
(PMA)
held
its
Western/Northern Regional Meeting at Shallow Bay Motel, Cow
Head, on June 11, 2010. The education session held at that time
was a two part workshop. The first component covered Records
Management and the policies and procedures that should be
followed within a municipal office. This session was facilitated by
PMA Western Director and Town Clerk, Town of Deer Lake,
Kimberly Reid. The second component was an interactive workshop
on Stress Management hosted by Mark Baldwin of the Dale Carnage
Program. Both sessions were very well received and provided both
the information and interaction that lends to productivity.
New Northern Representative
PMA is happy to announce that Diane Gear, Town Clerk, Town of
Labrador City, will serve as Northern Director on the PMA Board of
Directors.
We look forward to having Diane as part of our team and are
confident that she will provide valuable input and knowledge to
business surrounding PMA.
Next Regional Meeting
PMA will be holding its Eastern Regional Meeting on Friday, Sept.
10, at the Marystown Hotel & Convention Centre. All members will
be notified of the training session once confirmed.
Weather, Climate and My Community
PMA, MNL, and the provincial government, have partnered to develop tools to address
changes in weather and climate that are affecting coastal and freshwater systems in
the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). Flooding, beach erosion, property
damage due to storms and intrusion of salt water into drinking water supplies are just
a few examples. Communities will be affected by these changes in different ways
depending on their specific issues, geography, and ability to anticipate, cope with and
adapt to these changes.
The Enhancing Community Adaptation to Climate Change project will create tools to
help local decision-makers assess the possible effects of climate change on their
communities. These tools will also assist with identifying and assessing options for
reacting and adapting to these issues. A planning workbook and resource guide are
being developed that includes checklists, guidelines, sources of information and
assistance. These resources will be suitable for communities of different sizes and
abilities.
The planning workbook and resource guide will be used to help communities assess
their own issues, opportunities and options for solutions. This process will be piloted in
six communities in the Avalon Peninsula, West Coast, Burin Peninsula and Central
Newfoundland regions. Confirmed participating communities include the towns of
Fortune, Ferryland, Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove, the City of Corner Brook and
the Bonavista North region.
These pilot projects will:
1. Identify important water-related climate change issues in Newfoundland and
Labrador and in the pilot communities;
2. Develop strategies for adapting to anticipated community changes;
3. Evaluate the suitability of the planning workbook and resources for different
community sizes, capacities, and locations in the province; and
4. Assess techniques for assessing community vulnerabilities related to changes in
climate and water systems and potential adaptation solutions.
This project will compliment others underway throughout the Atlantic Provinces as
part of the Atlantic Climate Adaptation Solutions (ACAS) Initiative. This project is
funded by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and
Conservation and Natural Resources Canada in partnership with Municipalities
Newfoundland and Labrador, Professional Municipal Administrators and other
collaborating organizations.
