Parent Information www.uwsp.edu/biology/pages/fair Hosted by: Kyle George (student coordinator) & Dr. Joseph Covi (faculty coordinator; joseph.covi@uwsp.edu) Careers in biological sciences and medicine are expanding rapidly while many other lines of work are facing job cuts in the United States. The Physiology Fair is an interactive program that will help prepare your child to follow a career in physiology or medicine. Your role in this is simple but critical. Please, show your support in your child’s efforts to take advantage of this opportunity by encouraging them to complete a project. (See timeline and website listed above) What is the Physiology Fair? Students will develop a project alone or as part of a team. The choice is theirs to make. Undergraduate student sponsors from UWSP will be available to help. However, each team (or individual) will take responsibility for their project. Project formats may include: 1. Presenting data from a research experiment. 2. Holding an experiential learning booth. 3. Researching a topic in physiology and presenting a summary of their findings. See Project Specifications for details and links to helpful material on our web site. Student Support: Limited involvement is required from teachers or parents in student projects. UWSP provides Undergraduate Student Sponsors who volunteer their time to help students design and complete their projects. Contact information for student sponsors will be provided after entry. Any project questions can be directed to them or the fair coordinators. Our Goals Our mission is to provide an interactive learning experience for students that will enhance their interest in physiological and/or medical fields. Through this program we will provide… I. Student projects will be scored by a friendly panel of UWSP students and faculty. All students will be recognized for their hard work as Physiology Fair participants. Each student will receive a certificate of completion for their accomplishments. The top projects will receive special recognition and awards. Volunteers will also be recognized for their contribution. Any teachers or parents who are interested in volunteering to assist with the program should contact Dr. Joseph Covi in the UWSP Biology department. (e-mail address: jcovi@uwsp.edu) Timeline: An opportunity for students to gain practical experience in communicating scientific ideas. (College entrance committees look for these experiences.) II. An environment that encourages critical thinking and personal growth while providing a fun and positive experience for students. III. A view on career possibilities relating to science. IV. A chance for high school students to work with undergraduates from UWSP and learn about the college experience.
