Reading Workshop
Students will be expected to work independently on
differentiated activities while I am conferencing
with small groups. Students will be completing
word work activities, writing in their journals,
listening to books on cd, playing educational games
on the computer and reading books independently.
Each student will have their own schedule to
complete daily so that each student is working at
“their individual” levels.
Math Workshop
As a grade level, we have decided to take a
collaborative approach to best meet the needs
of our __ first graders. Our team feels that by
“sharing” students, the individual mathematical
needs of our student population is being met
more successfully then if we were self-contained
with in our own classroom communities.

How Student Groups Are Made
Prior to each topic unit, all students are given
a pre-assessment. After this pre-assessment is
completed, each teacher scores the
assessments and then enters the scores into a
google doc. Once all scores are entered, the
team then meets to look at the numbers and
determine the needs of the students.
The team then determines what “groups” are
needed (Enrichment, Progressing, and
Limited). Not all 3 groups are always
necessary however. At times we have needed
two Enrichment groups or two Progressing
groups.
How The Curriculum Is Delivered
Each subgroup follows the framework of the Dublin
Workshop Model. This model includes the following
components: an Opening, a Mini-Lesson, Work Time
(guided/independent) and time to Share/Reflect.
The Groups are all working on the same topic,
however the rigor of the concept is differentiated.
We are fortunate to have a Related Arts Teacher
working with us during our Math Workshop time.
Our Related Arts Teacher works in conjunction with
the teacher instructing the “Intervention” group. The
Intervention group also has the least amount of
students in it so that we can make sure we are
providing the students with explicit instruction that
is necessary for aiding the students to be successful
mathematicians.
The Enrichment group is working on the same overall
concept however they are digging deeper than what
the curriculum for the first grade asks of them.

What Happens After The Teaching
At the conclusion of the unit, students that did not
score an AC on the pre-assessment, take the postassessment. These post scores are then the scores
that are used for Progress Book. Each teacher also
looks at the post assessments and determines what
is still needed for their individual students. At our
team meetings, we then discuss if we need to
continue to move on or if we need to take a step
back and reteach certain concepts again.
Birthdays
Due to a wide variety of allergies over the last
few years, I have decided to have a snack
free/candy free classroom. I do however
understand wanting to celebrate birthdays at
school. IF you plan to celebrate your child’s
birthday at school and you want to provide a
treat please send in a NON-EDIBLE item. It is
school policy to NOT ALLOW any edible birthday
treats.
Absences/ Changes in Dismissal
• PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE,
notify me if your child is going
to go home in a way that is
different from their normal
routine. If I do not have a note
telling me of a change, I will
send them home as they
normally go.
• If you know your child is going
to be absent, please notify me
so that I can plan accordingly.
If your child is absent, they
need to have a note when
they return stating why they
were not present at school.
Take Home
Folders
The PTO provides each
student with a green folder.
This folder has a label on the
front with the student’s
name, id number and
classroom teacher. It is
IMPORTANT that your child
bring this folder to and from
school EVERY DAY! This is
how they will transport
communication between the
two. If you do not have a
folder for your child, please
let me know and I will get you
one.
Reading At Home (RAH)
Each child will bring home a RAH (Reading At Home) envelope.
Inside this envelope there will be a collection of books. These
books will either be “just right” books (ones they need minimal
to no help with) or instructional books (books that they are
reading in guided reading groups). They will also have a reading
log as well. Please try to have your child read at least one book
from the RAH envelope each night.
Homework
• Each child will have a homework packet. This packet will
have all their homework for the week. It will (mostly) go
home on Friday but may come home on a Monday
depending on weeks that we do not have school on a Friday
or Monday. I try to send homework home all at once so
that you can plan for it in your weekly schedule. Only the
completed/signed cover page should be returned on the
following Friday. I do not need the actual homework
returned.
• I DO NOT take a grade on homework, however I do keep
track of who is and is not completing it. I feel homework is
an important aspect of your child’s development as a
student and highly suggest completing it if you want to help
your child succeed to the best of their ability.
We are almost
done 
You completed a Student Information form for your
child. On the back page of this sheet was how you
could let me know if you would like to volunteer in
our classroom. Once all the forms have been
completed and returned, I will develop a monthly
volunteer schedule. I will send a copy of the
schedule home with each student. ALL
VOLUNTEERS MUST complete a background check
before working with our students. Please contact
the office and they will help you.
On the same schedule will be the related arts
schedule for the month. Our related arts schedule
follows a (4) day rotation. If we should miss school
due to inclement weather, I will update the schedule
and send a new copy home with the word UPDATED
on it.
This schedule can also be found on my teacher web
page if you should ever need another copy.
Book Orders
• I will send home
Scholastic Book Orders
each month. Through
Scholastic you can
purchase books for your
child. These orders can
be done online or you can
return the order form to
me to be submitted. A
letter will be attached
with instructions and a
due date to the order
forms each month.
