Associate Degree Nursing Program Advisory Committee Meeting October 15, 2008 IC 1037 8AM- 10AM Present: Linda Caputi, Lynn Bell, Katy O’Brien, Kristy Raptar, Donna Per, Ethel Ragland, Deb Jaffey, Jim Ryan, Jennifer Bra, Paulette Ortiz, Karen Solt, Joann Mazur, Bob Berry, Dilyss Gallyot, Kim Oosterhouse, Larinda Dixon, Janice Miller, recorder Topic Welcome: Dr. Lynn Engelmann Approval of Minutes Update on LPN Program Discussion Action Surveys to be completed for nurse practice; no longer legislated. Discussion of change-No legal mandate for the refresher course. Caputi: motioned to delay until further clarification of minutes to augment them. Evaluations to be completed Motioned seconded: Dr. Dixon Caputi discussed the LPN Program • High retention rate • Accolades to Donna Badowski, Teresa in their involvement in the self/study and NLNAC accreditation. Standards and criteria met • Last 8 weeks of course will focus on PN-CLEX preparation; presently aggregating data; examining live reviews, diagnostic readiness; no data yet • Will be collecting data. Targeting 6 months post graduation to better evaluate the program • Looking at transition process for students ADN transition course exiting the program Lynn opened discussion regarding transition course • Transition/bridge course- a decision must be made my November 17 to place incoming students • Discussion of the criteria for admission to the course: 1) Licensure (LPN) 2) work history 3) should they apply separately 4) give priority to LPN (COD) student? • Special testing may be in the future • How to facilitate student success to identify weaknesses • Should these incoming students be a separate cohort • Will need a description of courses, HESI exit; tests for progression; anticipation of potential curricular issues • Jeffay raised question: admitting LPNs from the outside. Caputi: stated that many of the current students enrolled in the LPN program have verbalized a desire to enter the ADN program • Jim Ryan: had and • Preference would be to take on COD LPN’s; will have to evaluate (numbers); predicted start date for course is Fall 2009 Update on Health Career and Natural Science Building questions about the PN role; differences in work responsibilities; earning power. Caputi: Stated that students are doing standardized testing; possibly by January could establish benchmarks; Waller: Concern for students not meeting the admission criteria, no experience with the LPN admission packet to compare with the ADN admission, any developmental needs; concern for interviewing variables. Caputi: there is not much difference in the plan from PN to RN. Ryan: questions should we be more selective for the PN, should there be concern for their transition to the role? Caputi: emphasized that we should not stifle someone’s career pathway, many have made successful transition from PNto-RN-to- BSN; these discussions are healthy Karen Solt: • Anticipated date of completion December 2009 • Update on Benedictine Bridge currently under construction; possibly completed in Spring 2009 • Discussion of teaching space • Next week there will be a walkthrough at 4pm; open to anyone • Second floor, ADN program, classrooms • Move date end of April, beginning of May 2009 • Up and running by Fall 2009 Ethel Ragland: • Announced that they have received full accreditation • Hired FT faculty experienced doctorally prepared • Have new adjunct from U of I • New hire: administrative assistant • Two cohorts currently running that started in January with anticipated completion date in December 2009; One started in June; retention rate is 98% • President of the University is committed to offering a 50% discount to these students • Three COD students in the cohort are presenting an Program Update evidence-based conference at Edwards Hospital on October 25, 2008 • Announced approval for an MSN completion program to be launched in Spring 2008; curriculum is built; tracks include Public Health Administration (MPH), MBA, and MSED • Discussion on high attrition rates for current BSN completion programs; attributes the success that these were due to 1) a hands on approach to students 2) follow-ups per phone 3) great faculty and 4) motivated students Engelmann: • Class of 2008, graduated 99 students in May; anticipating preliminary NCLEX scores within the next week; 40 students are expected to graduate December 2008 from the expanded program, coordinated by Maureen Waller. Discussion was positive from the expanded program, • • • • • great expertise from leased faculty and challenging for them Report from NLNAC conference ins September 2008; discussion surrounded the opportunities of seeing practitioners and educators together in a conference; shared NCSBN’s work on the transitions to practice and possibility of Nancy Spector coming to meet with the advisory committee members; discussion on grants for mentoring; innovations included orientation methods, overview of faculty role; new resources and textbooks are being created; new article by Oermann, and open to new ideas for faculty development Announcement: Deb del Ray, FT faculty, specialty in Mental Health, hired for the ADN program, start date in January 2009 Presently there is a search committee formed for another FT faculty position (internally) Donna Perchantz is the new hire for • • • • NLNAC Accreditation lab staff ( former COD graduate) Formal introduction to Dr. Bob Berry who completed his doctorate in May 2009. Kristy Rampton expressed interest in mentoring Lynn is working on folders to update orientation for clinical sites Fall 2009, admitted 99 first year students; 9 per clinical sites; second year (2109) 103 were admitted; there is possibly space to admit more into the next Med- surgical rotation Engelmann: • Announced the NLNAC site visit will be scheduled October 27-29 • A mock site visit was done with a consultant last week • Dr. Davel will be doing some final editing • Schedule has been approved for the site visit and encouraged community participants on October 28 at the college at 12:15 for an open discussion with site visitors; Agency Updates this will be an opportunity to discuss any positive of negative issues; job placements; process of the program • This program is seeking initial accreditation; the delay was due to the conversion from quarters to semester. The event has been a learning process for all involved in the preparation Lynn Bell • Expressed appreciation for COD students; Announced that Barbara Monroe (graduate of 2008) was a new hire Kathy O’Brien • Discussion regarding a new computer system/software Serner • Possible computer system changes; focus is on informatics for students; automated systems Kristy • Discussed the physical department changes at Edwards • Currently are exposed to 500 students from different colleges/universities; creating ways to expand their observations into areas such as cardiac rehab, cardiovascular institute; health and heart fairs • New garage is being built • No new hires with economic changes • Students with observations in short stay, to contact Mike Brow, manager Lynn Engelmann • Webinar: central scheduling; still some confusion of use/time frame of responses with clinical requests; due dates… Linda B. • Students are able to shadow weaning of vents • Offering long orientation an preceptorship • Experience with high risk, high acuity patients • Critical thinking is lacking; progress notes/documentation issues of students who cannot spell • See the need to focus on time management; infection control; organizational skills • Great observations with family Dialogue conferences and collaboration of other disciplines Joann Mazur • Started ground breaking for new building • Education is located in the “basement” • Meditech continues to be upgraded: will have a new look in Jan/Feb 2009 • Discussed physical changes in CV and Pediatrics, more private rooms/addressing MRSA and isolation cases • Cutting bed occupancy: 269 • Parking continues to be a problem; encourage students to carpool • Still hiring new grads Caputi • Initiated discussion of curriculum: integrating more critical thinking; documentation and charting; suggested further defining/clarifying what is critical thinking Donna • Suggested for ADN program to include more critical thinking; case studies; prioritization; concept mapping Open discussion • New grade are more task oriented; not enough staff to orient; should encourage more internships prior tp forma orientation in the hospital; priorities for facultyaddress priorities during orientation, creative assignments for clinical, NCLEX preparation; use of CD-ROMS for interactive case studies (developed by Caputi Meeting Adjourned at 10:03
