If I notice your child doing an outstanding job of displaying one of the thinking habits, I may give him or her a sticker to wear. If your child comes home wearing one of these stickers, ask how he or she displayed that habit at school. I’m hoping that these stickers will be a great way to hear more about your child’s day as well as hear how the students are growing as thinkers! The kids are learning that thinkers: -Ask questions -Persevere -Collaborate -Present ideas confidently -Think flexibly -Create and innovate March 11, 2016 Our Class Book We have been working hard on a class book for weeks. During the second trimester, our writing focus was opinion writing. The students learned about what an opinion is and how to give a reason to explain/defend your opinion. We decided to write a class book called The Best Color. Each student wrote and illustrated a page of the book to share their opinion of what the best color is. I will be sending our class book to Studentreasures Publishing to have our class book printed. Our students will be published authors and illustrators. They are so excited! J Our writing process: -We read mentor texts: My Blue is Happy by Jessica Young and Yellow is My Color Star by Judy Horacek. -First draft: Students wrote words and drew a picture. -Buddy editing -Second draft: Students made changes based on their buddy’s suggestions. -Editing conference with Mrs. W -Third draft: Students made changes based on the conference with Mrs. W. -Final draft: Students copied their words and illustrations onto Studentreasures pages. -Cover design contest: Each student designed a cover and everyone in the class voted to choose the cover and title pages of our book. Congratulations to Mattie (cover) and Ryan (title page) from the AM class and Jane (cover) and Andrew (title page) from the PM class. Their designs will be on our class book! In order for our classroom to receive a free copy of our class book, I need all families to sign and return the order form from Studentreasures. It doesn’t matter if you choose to order a book or not, please return your signed form to school ASAP. Even if no one orders a book, we will get a free copy to keep in our classroom if all students return a signed form. Thank you for your help with this! J We can’t wait to receive our class book and celebrate our accomplishment as real authors!
