Check out this catch Thomas made while playing football with friends at recess! nnn After reading one of Aesop's fables, “The Ant and the Grasshopper,” we discussed how some modern day authors can write original fables that were based on or inspired by a fable from long ago. We looked closely at an example of how this is done using the book, Fredrick by Leo Lionni. Tell someone at home which parts of the story were similar to Aesop’s fable and which parts Leo Lionni changed. In Math we worked on our estimation and problem solving skills. After looking at a variety of word problems, we practiced how to fill in a mathematical diagram/picture to explain our thinking (Lesson 3-5). We also spent time thinking about strategies to use when solving 3 digit by 3 digit subtraction problems. The strategies we practiced included: breaking apart and open number line. Next week we will practice the standard subtraction (borrowing) algorithm. Can you solve 324 - 245? Narrative writing was a hot topic in our classroom this week! We spent time collecting details, coming up with a problem/solution for stories and talked about how writing a story can be compared to climbing a mountain. Tell someone at home what you chose to write about! Upcoming Events &Reminders: AUTHOR VISIT: Kate Messner will be visiting Pinney next Monday and Tuesday.
