COLLEGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES
EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES SEMINAR
HISTORY OF THE SEMINAR:
Since 1972, students, faculty, and staff from the College of Natural Resources have traveled to Europe annually to
learn first-hand about European environmental problems and natural resource management practices. This program
was initially developed in cooperation with the forest service of the state of Baden-Württemberg. In subsequent
years, visits to Poland and Iceland have been added to the itinerary. As a result, the European Environmental
Studies Seminar now offers CNR students a unique opportunity to explore a wide breadth of environmental
issues and resource management programs in a number of European countries.
PURPOSE OF THE SEMINAR: This course is divided into three components.
Spring Semester Orientation, 1 credit
NATURAL RESOURCES 475/675 – Spring Seminar
Mondays - 16:00-16:50 TNR 122
This orientation provides background information to deepen and enhance the European experience. It also
provides an opportunity to prepare logistically for the trip. Portions of the class will be online.
Central WI Environmental Station Field Studies, 2 credits
NATURAL RESOURCES 475/675 – CWES
Dates: May 18 to May 29, 2015 (tentative)
Undergraduates in the College of Natural Resources who are choosing this summer seminar in lieu of Treehaven
will attend a two-week summer camp at the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station. This camp will provide
students with essential field techniques in forestry, soils, water, wildlife and plant ID.
European Environmental Studies Seminar, 5 credits
NATURAL RESOURCES 475/675 – Germany/Poland/Iceland
Dates: July 7 – August 12, 2015 (tentative)
Included in this seminar are lectures and field studies on environmental problems and resource management
practices in Germany, Poland, Iceland and other European countries. An abbreviated itinerary follows.
PARTICIPANTS:
Dr. Kevin Russell, Wildlife Ecology and Management, and Dr. Tim Ginnett, Wildlife Ecology and Management,
will be leading approximately 42 students. Participants may include the following, in order of priority:
Undergraduates attending the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, who
choose this summer seminar in lieu of the six-week Treehaven field experience requirement. These students
must attend the spring seminar class and the two week mini-summer field camp at the Central Wisconsin
Environmental Station in May. There has been a waiting list of students from this category almost annually.
Graduate students from UWSP, if space permits. These students are not required to attend the spring orientation
and CWES camp. While in Europe, an independent project will be required and the graduate student will
give a seminar on this project. Three to five credits may be earned.
Juniors, Seniors or Graduate Students at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) or schools other
than UWSP, if space permits. Environmentally-related majors will be given preference but all will be
considered. These students are not required to attend the spring seminar or the CWES program. They earn
five credits for the European study.
Other participants - Special arrangements can be made for any interested individual, if space permits.
ESTIMATED PROGRAM COSTS:
Program costs will not be finalized until May 2015. The program cost estimate is $7400-7900 for Wisconsin
residents, depending on tuition increases, fuel surcharges on airline tickets, program changes and currency
exchange rate fluctuations.
• Minnesota residents should expect to pay approximately a $150 tuition surcharge with approved
reciprocity.
• Non-residents should anticipate a $500 tuition surcharge.
