Mrs. Luz Maria Baumann of 48 Bastogna, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina,
has been elected publicity chairman of the Spanish Club at Methodist
College for the coming year.
She has also been named to the spring semester president's
List, which was instituted for the first time at Methodist College this
winter.
To be selected for this honor, a student must carry a 4.0
grade-point-average for the semester.
Mrs. Baumann, a 1958 graduate of Julia Richman High School in New York,
is the wife of Major Allen A. Baumann, who is attached to the 3d Brigade
of the 82d Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg.
His parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Alexander Baumann, live at Route 2, Olivia, Minn.
Mrs. Baumann, who attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San
Antonio, Texas for two years, was elected to Alpha Mu Gamma, national
Foreign Language Honor Society at Our Lady of the Lake College.
The Baumanns are the parents of three children.

Mrs. Desiree Babet Rogers of Cambridge Arms Apartments, Fayetteville,
has been elected secretary-treasurer of the Spanish Club at Methodist
College for the coming year.
A 1973 graduate of W.E. Boswell High School in Saginaw, Texas, Mrs.
Rogers is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward E. Shore of 4701 William
Springs Road, Fort Worth.
Her husband, Garry Dale Rogers, U.S. Army, is also a native of
Ft. Worth.
They are living in Fayetteville, while he is assigned by the
Army to Ft. Bragg.
Mrs. Rogers has also been named to the spring semester dean's
list at Methodist College.

Association, head typist of the newspaper staff, a member of the college

Miss Kathleen West of 212 Ellington St., Fayetteville, was honored by her
co-workers upon her retirement from Methodist College.
Miss West, who joined the college staff nine years ago, retired as assistant
bookkeeper. She was previously employed as secretary to Dr.v J . N . Robertson.
Upon her retirement, Miss West was presented with a gift "in token of
her dedication and loyalty", from the college's administrative staff personnel.

Methodist College's summer session is bupsting at the seams.
According to Dr. Fred C. McDavid, summer school director, "we now
have more than 800 registrations for the entire session, which is more than 200
over last year.. .and we've received more for the second term(which is now
in session), and for the third term, a directed study program, which begins
July 15."
Professor of education and psychology and chairman of the education and
psychology department, Dr. McDavid explained that "we're teaching more courses
than ever before. A student may now earn 15 semester hours during the three
summer sessions., .and with the permission of the dean, even earn 18 to 21
semester hours."

Dr. McDavid sees a positive attitude toward the summer session, which .
has grown trememdously. "And the schedule is much more flexible than before,"
the director explained.

A survey shows popular courses to include economics,
religion, minority
relations, psychology of personal adjustment, educational psychology, special
research topics, science courses and health in the elementary schools.

Mrs. Susan Garrick Motes of 625 E. Raynor Drive has been named an
assistant in the Public Relations Office at Methodist College.
Announcing her appointment, Methodist College's assistant to the president,
William P. L .wdermilk said, "we are most pleased that Susan has agreed to come
and assume the responsibility of the position. Her involvement in activities
as a student and her continued interest in the college as an alumnus makes her
particularly qualified for this position. Her specific responsibilities will be in
the alumni program."
Mrs. Motes succeeds John G. Dicks 3d, who is enrolled as a student
at the Stetson University School of Law.
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grier L. Garrick of 414 Woodland Drive,
Jacksonville, Mrs. Motes received an A . B . in economics and business
administration in 1971 from Methodist College.
While a student, she was business manager of sMALL Talk, chairman of
the Student Government Association Elections Committee, Justice of the SGA High
Court, secretary of her dorm, Weaver Hall, and of the sophomore class, a
freshman senator and president of the junior class.
A member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority , Mrs . Motes is married to William H.
Motes, an instructor in economics and business at Methodist.

The appointment of Robert B. Turner of 404 Murray Hill Road as Student
Union Director at Methodist College has been announced by Dean of Students,
Gene Clayton.
Clayton said, "we are happy Bob has joined us. We're certain he will be
a real asset to the Student Life program. He has always had a dedicated interest
in Methodist College, as a student, as a resident of the community and as assistant
golf coach at Methodist. All of the students are excited about his appointment.
We have the entire first semester's activities planned. Bob believes in the
students planning and implementing the programs. He's willing to help, but
feels the activities must be student-oriented and originated."

A retired major in the U.S . Army, Turner is a native of Ft. Lauderdale,
Fla. Awarded an A.A. in general education from Broward Community College,
he received an A.B. in political science in December, 1972, from Methodist
College .
A member of AUSA, Turner is on the Board of Directors of the LaFayette
Kiwanis Club, and was cochairman of the 1972-73 Academic Affairs Committee
at Methodist College.
He and his wife, Frances, are the parents of a son, Bob.

Methodist Scholarships by trie Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the
United Methodist Church.
Daniel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. KennethK. Daniel Sr. of Old Stage Road,
St. Pauls.
Mansfield is the son of Mrs. Jessie U . Mansfield of 1432 Dixie Trail,
Raleigh, and of Raymond M. Mansfield.
United Methodist Scholarships are given in the amount of $500 to apply
toward tuition and academic fees. The scholarships are granted on the basis of
academic standing, leadership ability, churchmanship and need.
About 500 awards are given annually through the Board of Higher Education
and Ministry in its nationwide scholarship program. More than 12,500 United
Methodist Scholarships have been granted since the program was started in
1945.
Funds for the support of United Methodist Scholarships are received from

"Carolina College, though closed, continues to surge forward in the lives
of its alumnae through spirit, tradition, leadership and character."
Addressing the annual reunion Saturday, June 15, of the Carolina College

Alumnae, Methodist College President, Dr. Richard W. Pearce, said, "you
(the alumnae) understand that education is far more than learning to make- a
living. . .it is preparation to make a life."
He said that private, church involved colleges must build character.
They must educate with standards. . .moral, ethical, spiritual, with leadership
by an involved student life program and through teaching our tradition as a
guidepost for the future. We at Methodist College are proud of your adopting
us as your alma mater for we hope to continue that kind of concerned, involved
education that made you strong. . .education that is not just minds alone, but
also character, leadership and tradition."
Some 60 Carolina College Alumnae attended the reunion festivities, held
at Methodist College.
A three-foot column, the only part of the Carolina Hall building to survive
the Nov. 8, 1973, fire, was presented to the Alumnae Association by Mrs. Dorothy

Collins of Maxton. Transformed into a flower pedestal, the column has been
painted white with gold trim. Also presented to the Association was an original
etching of Carolina Hall. The etching was done in connection with the 200th

Carolina College memorabilia, which includes insignia, yearbooks, newspapers,
faculty, friends and students' pictures and school catalogues. Also included are
copies of the contents of the corner stone of the Carolina Hall-building, erected
July 30, 1909.
The corner stone's original contents are located in the Department of
Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and History in Raleigh.

Miss Brenda Jean Warner of Fayetteville has received a Holt-Williamson

New to the Scholarship list for the coming year are Presidential Scholarships,
which are full-tuition scholarships and will be renewable for three years. Presidential
