For the first time ever, Methodist College has instituted a President's
List.
Of the 175 students who received academic recognition for the first
semester, 20 were named to the President's List, while 155 were named to the
Dean's List.
According to college president, Dr. Richard W. Pearce, "we were delighted
and proud to have so many students achieve this honor. We feel those students

who attained the grade point average of 4.0 for the semester should be
recognized separately."

Dr. Charles M . Speegle of 2214 Mirror Lake Drive, Fayetteville, today has
been named chairman of the 1974 Community Loyalty Fund Campaign For Methodist
College .
In making the announcement, Methodist College Foundation President, J.
Scott McFadyen J r . , stated that the campaign will begin with a Kick-Off Breakfast
at Methodist College on Feb. 12 .
Dr. Speegle, a veterinarian, is a native of Texas. Having served with
the U.S . Army during World War II, he received a degree in veterinary medicine
from the University of Georgia. He also attended North Carolina State University.
President of the North Carolina Veterinary Research Foundation, he is a
director of the Methodist College Foundation. An elder and clerk of session of
Highland Presbyterian Church, he is director of the Fayetteville Area Industrial
Development Corp. Chairman of the board of trustees of the Emergency Youth
Home of the Fayetteville Presbytery, he is also a trustee of the Presbyterian Home
for the Aged in High Point. Dr. Speegle is also past moderator of the Fayetteville
Presbytert.
He and his wife, the former Jessie MacFadyen of Fayetteville, are the parents
of a son, Charles M . Speegle Jr. of Charlotte.

FAYETTEVILLE-Mrs. Sharon Britten Elliott of 3282 Gable Drive, Fayetteville, has received
academic honors for the first semester at Methodist College.
She was one of 20 students who were named to the President's List, which
was instituted this year at Methodist College for the very first time. In order to
receive this honor, a student must carry a 4.0 grade point average for the
semester.
One hundred and fifty-five students were named to the dean's list,
which is for students who maintain a
3.0 average for the semester.
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold M . Britten of Rural Route, Zearing, Iowa,

Mrs. Elliott is a 1970 graduate of Nesco High School.
She completed three years at the University of Missouri at Columbia,
where she majored in journalism. Awarded the Lafayette Young Scholarship and
a $1,500 grant from the University School of Journalism, Mrs. Elliott was employed
as a personnel assistant by the University Housing Office at Missouri.
Mrs. Elliott was also employed by the Dean's Office of the School of
Journalism, was also a reporter and newscaster for KCCS, the campus radio
station, a dean's list student for five semesters and was also named to the
Tri-Penta Scholastic Honorary Society.
She and her husband, Second Lieutenant Charles Robert Elliott, are living
in Fayetteville, while he is serving as information officer at Pope Air Force Base.

Rabbi Leo J . Stillpass, spiritual leader of Temple Beth Or in Raleigh, will
address an assembly on Jan. 30 at 10:30 a . m . in Reeves Auditorium, located on
the Methodist College campus.
The program is open to the public at no charge.
Rabbi Stillpass will discuss "The Israeli-Arabic Conflict" . His lecture
is sponsored by the Jewish Chautauqua Society, an organization which creates
better understanding of Jews and Judiasm through education. The Jewish
Chautauqua Society is sponsored by the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods .
A member of the executive board of the Raleigh Ministers' Association,

he is a resident lecturer for the Jewish Chautauqua Society at Shaw Divinity School in
Rale igh. Rabbi Stillpass, a member of the board of the North Carolina
Council on Human Relations, is also a member of a National Commission on Worship.
Rabbi Stillpass serves as president of the Greater Carolinas Association
of Rabbis and of the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Central Conference on American
Rabbis.

FAYETTEVILLE-Mrs. Lillian Catherine Evans of Fayetteville has received academic
honors for the first semester at Methodist College .
She was one of 20 students who were named to the President's List,
which was instituted at Methodist College this year for the very first time.
In order to receive this honor, a student must carry a 4 . 0 grade point average
for the semester.
One hundred and fifty-five students were named to the dean's
list, which is for students who maintain a 3.0 average for the semester.
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M . F . Powers of Route 1, St. Pauls, Mrs.
Evans is a junior elementary education major.
She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.G Allen of 805 E. 3d Street,
Lumberton.
Mrs. Evans is a student assistant, employed at Methodist College.
Her husband, Kenneth Ray Evans, is a 1972 graduate of Methodist College

Mrs. Mary Helen Ragsdale Faison of 225 N. Ashe Street, Southern
Pines, was named to the first semester dean's list at Methodist College.
Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Ragsdale, Mrs. Faison is a 1960
graduate of Smithfield High School. She attended Wake Forest and Atlantic
Christian College.
She and her husband, Thomas Senter Faison, are the parents of three

FAYETTEVILLE-Mr. Henry Cleveland Francis of 4813 "M" College Court Lot 21,
Fayetteville, has been named to the first semester dean's list at Methodist
College.
Son of Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland M. Francis, he is a 1966 graduate of
Ahoskie High School.
Mr. Francis attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro,
N.C.
He served for four years as an Air Force Security Policeman and sentry
dog handler.
Mr. Francis is an honor graduate of the U . S . Air Force Security
Police Technical School and an honor graduate of the U . S . Air Force Sentry
Dog Handler School, both at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
He and his wife, Patricia, are the parents of a son.

Miss Virginia Gayle Godwin of Fayetteville has been awarded a United
Methodist Scholarship by the Board of Education of the United Methodist
Church.
A senior sociology major at Methodist College, Miss Godwin is t h e daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Rubin Godwin of 1812 McGougan Road, Fayetteville.
Miss Godwin is one of three Methodist College students to receive a
United Methodist Scholarship award. The others are Miss Mary Alice Gore
of Tabor City, N .C . , and Miss Debra Elaine Neill of North Cape May, N . J .
United Methodist Scholarships are given in the amount of $500 to apply
toward tuition and academic fees . The scholarships are granted on the basis
of academic standing, leadership ability, churchmanship and need.
Approximately 500 awards are given annually through the Board of Higher
Education and Ministry in its nationwide scholarship program. More than 12,000
United Methodist Scholarships have been granted since the program was begun
in 1945. Funds for the support of United Methodist Scholarships are received
from offerings given through the local churches across "the nation on United
Mettiodist Student Day, the second Sunday in June .

Miss Debra Elaine Neill, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Edward Neill
of 714 Caspian Avenue, North Cape May, N . J . , has been awarded a United
Methodist Scholarship by the Board of Education of the United Methodist
Church.
A sophomore sociology major at Methodist College, Miss Neill is also a
dean's list student. She has been elected to the Judicial Board of her dorm,
Garber Hall.
