A $5,050.00 contribution has just been made to Methodist College by
the nine Belk-Hensdale stores of this area.
Announcement of the gift was made today by "William P. Pope, executive
director of the Fayetteville College Foundation.
During a recent visit to the college campus Richard Hensdale presented
the checks to Dr. L. Stacy Weaver, president of the college. In expressing
his appreciation for the gift President "Weaver said, "Such evidence of interest
in the development of Methodist College is a source of real encouragement to us
in our efforts to provide an opportunity for more young people of this area
to obtain a college education."
Each year since the college opened the Belk-Hensdale stores have contributed to a special fund which ultimately will be used to build the chapel
at Methodist College. Students and staff of the college look forward to
the day when the chapel becomes a reality.
Belk-Hensdale stores with their managers from the following towns
participated in the gift: Whiteville, Charles Register; Lumberton, Charles
Gardner; Dunn, Marvin Raynor; Elizabethtown, Milton Register; Raeford,
Cecil Phillips; Laurinburg, Archie Hampton; Rockingham, Dave Gibson;
Fayetteville, John W. Hensdale; B & H, Fayetteville, Frank Faulkner.

The Stonewall 4-H Club of Hoke County during a recent visit to the
Methodist College campus in Fayetteville pause in one of the biology
laboratories during the campus tour. The Rev. Bill Lowdarmilk, assistant
director of public relations, right, conducts the tour. Mrs. Woodrow Hayes,
adult 4-H leader was in charge of the trip. Mrs. Harry Daniels and Mrs.
Jim Maxwell, 4-H parents accompanied the group. Club members making
the trip were: Debbie Anderson, Allen Phillips, Donna McMillan, Jimmy
Maxwell, Lynwood Hayes, Gail Ellis, Linda Hayes, Mickey Beasley,
William Daniels, and Gwen Anderson. Judy Daniels and Sally Lynne Maxwell,
were club visitors, during the trip.

Alan M. Porter, tenor, and Harlan F. Duenow, pianist, will perform
Schubert's song cycle, Die Schoene Muellerin. Tuesday evening, February 9,
in the Student Union on the Methodist College Campus.
The program will begin at 8:00 p . m . and is one of the Concert-Lecture
Series sponsored by the college and open to the public.
Mr. Porter, instructor of voice and choral music at Methodist College,
holds degrees in music from Mount Union College, Alliance, Ohio, and
the University of Illinois. While doing graduate work in voice, he studied
with Paul Ulanowsky and Pierre Bemac and was active in the opera group.
Since coming to Fayetteville in September of 1963, he has been choir
director of the Hay Street Methodist Church Choir and has made many
appearances in this area as soloist. This program will be the third recital
he has presented under the sponsorship of Methodist College.
Concert-goers most recently heard a sacred recital at St. John's Episcopal Church presented jointly by Mrs. Jean Ishee and Mr. Porter. Last May
he was tenor soloist in the performance of the Mozart Requiem by the College
Chorus and the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. In the summer he sang the
tenor solo part in Schubert's Mass in G which was performed on the campus
of St. Andrews Presbyterian College. In August he participated in two of
the programs of the Festival of Festivals in Raleigh sponsored by the
North Carolina Music Society.

Mr. Porter and Mr. Duenovv have made several appearances together since
their first program in November, 1963.
Sergeant Harlan F. Duenow, who is stationed with the 440th U . S . Army
Band at Fort Bragg, comes from Waterloo, Iowa. He attended the State
College of Iowa, where he studied piano with Mrs. Suzanne Conklin-Happ.
While in college Sgt. Duenow was opera rehearsal accompanist and
accompanist for music students throughout the entire student body. After
college he worked as a professional accompanist and voice coach and
was the private accompanist of Mr. Charles D. Matheson.
At present, Sgt. Duenow is the rehearsal conductor of the 440th Army
Band, Choir-master and organist of the Main Post Chapel of Fort Bragg, and
Conductor of the Fort Bragg-Pope Air Force Chapel Chorus.

Fayetteville, N. C.—Registration for the second semester at Methodist College has
closed with a total of 700 students enrolled for classes this semester. The enrollment at
the same time last year was 525.
The current enrollment represents an increase of 81 students over the enrollment of
619 at the beginning of the first semester of the current academic year.
According to S. R. Edwards, Registrar, 658 students are full time, 30 are part-time
and 12 are special students.

Fayetteville, N . C.—Dr. Arthur W. Cooper, professor of botany at North Carolina
State, University of North Carolina at Raleigh, will be the guest lecturer at a meeting
of the Science Club at Methodist College on Thursday evening, February 11. He will
speak on the subject, "Vegetation of North Carolina" .
Dr. Cooper is a native of Washington, D. C. and holds the B. A. and M. A.
degrees from Colgate University and the Ph. D. degree from the University of Michigan.
He has served on the faculty of N. C. State since 1958.
His major field of research has been in the field of microclimatology and vegetation
of North Carolina (particularly mountain and piedmont forests and salt marshes).
He is chairman of the Conservation Committee of the North Carolina Academy of
Sciences.
This is the second in a series of lectures sponsored by the Science Club.
The meeting will be held in the Science Building Auditorium and will begin at
7:00 p . m .
Studmts and teachers from high schools and colleges of the Fayetteville area are

METHODIST COLLEGE — ON AND OFF CAMPUS
Eighty-one new students have been enrolled at the college for the second
semester bringing the enrollment for the year to a total of 700.
President L. Stacy Weaver attended the meeting of American Association of
School Administrators In Atlantic City February 13-17.
Anna Dixon of Burlington and a freshman at Methodist College has been elected
secretary of the State Methodist Student Movement.
Alan Porter, voice instructor at Methodist College, performed ten Schubert's
"Die Schoene Muellerin" (Fair Maid of the Mill) on Tuesday evening, February 9,
in the Student Union. This is believed to be the first complete performance of
this work of Schubert in Fayetteville. The performance was one of the programs
in the Concert-Lecture Series by the College.
Twenty-three high school seniors participated in the scholarship examinations
at the college on February 7. Sixteen seniors visited the campus on the weekend
of February 13.
Mr. McAdams was the speaker for the Methodist Man of Spring Lake Church
on February 1 * On February 3 he spoke for the men of Peace Presbyterian Church
of Fayetteville. Ha was the speaker for the Spring Lake Chamber of Commerce on
February 10. On February 14 he and students Anna Dixon and Gail Harrison
participated in the 11 o'clock service at the Keener Methodist Church.

Dr. Samuel J. Womack, Jr., Area Chairman of Religion and Philosophy, taught
in the Goldsboro Area Christian Worker's School during the first week in February.
He taught in a similar school for the Morehead City area during the third week in
January.

Walter Turner, Ed Voorhees, and Tommy Yow are the official representatives from the Student Government Association at Methodist
College to the State Student- Legislature now meeting in Raleigh.
Yow, who is from Rockingham, is treasurer of the SGA; Voorhees,
from Morehead City, is treasurer of the junior class; and Turner,
from Kure Beach, is a senator from the senior class to the SGA.
Turner
is also Chairman of the North Carolina Federation of College Young
Democrats.
David Altman, President of the SGA at Methodist College, is unable

Methodlist Col tege Student Attends Workshop
Nancy Best of Franklinton, N. C., a Methodist C o l l e g e
senior, was one of two delegates from the North Carolina
Conference to attend the Southeastern J u r i s d i c t i o n Vocations
Conference held recently at Scarritt College, N a s h v i l l e ,
Tennessee.
She was one of 29 g i r l s attending from the J u r i s d i c t i o n
which is made up of 9 southeastern states.
Miss Best has also been awarded a $1,000 scholarship
from the Woman's Society of Christian Service of the North
Carolina Conference for graduate study at Scarritt College.
She plans to do graduate study i n Christian Education and
then go to the m i s s i o n f i e l d *
Miss Best is majoring in r e l i g i o n at Methodist C o l l e g e *

of R a l e i g h and a graduate of the Woman's C o l l e g e , U n i v e r s i t y of
North C a r o l i n a w i t h a B.M. degree, and of the New E n g l a n d Conservatory
w i t h a Masters in Music.
She also attended the Academy of M u s i c in
V i enna.
Whi l e i n Massachusetts, M i s s Rothgeb performed w i t h the Boston
L y r i c Theatre and sang numerous concerts
For two summers she performed
in the New E n g l a n d area.

1957 M i s s Rothgeb was granted a F u l b r i g h t Scholarship for study
in V i e n n a , and a year later received a grant from the Beebee Foundation

She made a concert tour of Austria under the sponsorship of the
A m e r i c a House.
In the summer of I960 she was soprano soloist in the
Creative Arts F e s t i v a l
in Boulder, Colorado, and completed a seven-
months tour with the N a t i o n a l Opera Company in the 1960-61 season.
In the summer of 1961 she sang the t i t l e role in the V i e n n a Chamber
Opera production of an unknown R o s s i n i opera, "Gelegenheit Macht Dieb",
at the Schoenbrun Palace Theatre.
M i s s Rothgeb has also toured w i t h the Swiss Opera Company, and in
the s p r i n g of 1964 toured as soloist w i t h a V i e n n e s e Ensemble in I t a l y ,
Japan, A u s t r a l i a , and other points in the Far and Near East.
